The red gold of the Bassa Veronese, a fair for almost forty years
The Casaleone Red Chicory Fair is one of the longest-running food and wine events in the Bassa Veronese, in the province of Verona. Dedicated to red chicory – called 'red gold' here for its intense color and its value to the local agricultural economy – the fair has reached its 37th edition, a sign of a deeply rooted tradition in the community.
Organized by the Pro Loco Carpanea, the fair takes place over two weekends between January and February, in Piazza della Pace and the Piastra Polivalente. The food stand offers many interpretations of chicory: from semilong red chicory risotto to bigoli with chicory and speck, accompanied by local wines and grilled meats. The program blends taste and culture with agricultural conferences (organized by Coldiretti), photographic exhibitions, school displays, book presentations, and unpublished poetry awards.
There are also events that invite visitors to experience the local area: the Radicchio March, guided 'Radicchio Route' tours of farms, FIAB cycle tourism gatherings, an exhibition of vintage tractors, and five-a-side football tournaments. The fair is finally linked to the patron saint's feast day, San Biagio (February 3rd), with a mass and a community dinner. An event that in Casaleone unites agricultural identity, conviviality, and popular culture.
