Four days of sport, music, and community at Campi d'Annibale for the yellow-and-blue centenary
There is a uniquely Italian way to celebrate a sports club: not with a closed-door ceremony, but with a festival open to the entire town. This is exactly what happens in Rocca di Papa, a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Rome, in the heart of the Castelli Romani, when ASD Canarini 1926 calls the community together for its Canarini Festival. The Campi d'Annibale Municipal Park, a vast green space on the slopes of Monte Cavo, becomes the center of local social life for a few days.
The Canarini (Canaries) are not just the town's football team: they are the only football club in Rocca di Papa and, for a century, one of the main pillars of local community life. The yellow-and-blue nickname, from which the festival takes its name, has almost legendary origins: one version claims the colors were chosen by drawing lots, inheriting them from Modena; another, more prosaic version, suggests that white fabric was scarce and yellow was simply the most available material.
The formula is the tried-and-tested one of Lazio's summer festivals, tailored to the club's sporting identity. The days are filled with sports tournaments, traditional games, and competitions designed for all ages, with the football school area reserved for the youngest. In the evening, the park changes its face, hosting concerts, dance orchestras, and entertainment moments open to all citizens.
The event that has garnered the most affection in recent years is the Firefly Night, a night walk of just under five kilometers through the wooded trails surrounding Rocca di Papa. It starts after sunset, with mandatory flashlights and limited-entry booking, to cross the forest at the hour when fireflies turn the undergrowth into a natural spectacle. The initiative, managed by the club's Walkers Section, has seen hundreds of participants, including families, young people, and hikers.
The 2026 edition coincided with the club's one hundred years, symbolically founded on November 13, 1926. The centenary program does not end with the summer festival: the club announced a youth tournament in August at the Gavini Lionello sports field and a commemorative volume with testimonies and archival photographs, with celebrations continuing until November 2026. In its history, the club boasts a semi-final in the Coppa Italia Dilettanti in the 1979-1980 season and the victory of the Prima Categoria championship in 2024, which earned them promotion to the Promozione league.
Reaching Campi d'Annibale means heading to higher ground: the hamlet is located at over 700 meters above sea level, within the Castelli Romani Regional Park, in a volcanic basin overlooking Lake Albano and the Roman countryside. The festival is therefore also an opportunity to discover a territory made of chestnut forests, scenic trails, and historic villages, less than an hour from Rome. Those who come up for the event can easily find, within a few kilometers, the fraschette (traditional taverns) and cellars of the Castelli, where Colli Albani wines accompany the most authentic Roman cuisine.
The Canarini Festival does not have the ambition of large festivals: it is a community event, and that is precisely its value. Free admission, a family atmosphere, and a public park that becomes a meeting point for generations for a few days. For those visiting the Castelli Romani in summer, it is the most authentic way to get in touch with the life of a town in the Lazio region.
From July 16 to 19, 2026, Rocca di Papa celebrated the century of life of its historic sports club with four days of activities at the Campi d'Annibale Municipal Park. A program built around sport, music, and community participation, with the support of the Lazio Region and the patronage of the Municipality of Rocca di Papa.
On Thursday, July 16, the festival opened at 6:00 PM with a parade from Piazza Giuseppe Di Vittorio along Via Pozzo del Principe to the municipal park, where the children of the football school and all the club's squads took part. After the institutional greetings and the official presentation of the first team, entrusted to the new coach Fabio Marziali, the Alberto Laurenti and Rumba de Mar orchestra took the stage at 9:00 PM.
On Friday, July 17, with a meeting at 8:30 PM at the La Pompa Municipal Park and departure at 8:45 PM, the Firefly Night took place: a night walk of about 4.5 kilometers through the wooded trails, managed by the Walkers Section led by Luca Dipierro. Hundreds of participants, including families, young people, and hikers, took part in the itinerary, which was limited and required booking.
On Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19, the festival continued at Campi d'Annibale with sports tournaments, traditional games, competitions for all ages, and further evening musical performances, with the park transformed into a meeting place for the entire town.
By car from Rome: Take the Via Appia or Via Tuscolana towards the Castelli Romani, then climb towards Rocca di Papa and the Campi d'Annibale hamlet (about 30 km from the Grande Raccordo Anulare). Parking is available near the municipal park.
By public transport: Metro A to Anagnina, then a Cotral bus to Rocca di Papa. By train, the nearest stations are Frascati or Castel Gandolfo, followed by a bus or taxi ride.
Free admission to the Campi d'Annibale Municipal Park. The Firefly Night has limited capacity and requires mandatory booking: flashlights are essential, strollers are not allowed, and minors must be accompanied by an adult.
At Campi d'Annibale, at over 700 meters above sea level, summer evenings are cool: it is advisable to bring a sweatshirt. For the walks, trekking shoes or closed-toe footwear with soles suitable for trails are required.
