A festival dedicated to the iconic summer dish

The San Cesareo Panzanella Festival celebrates one of the most beloved staples of Italian popular tradition: stale bread soaked and seasoned with ripe tomatoes, high-quality olive oil, and seasonal vegetables. A peasant recipe originally created to avoid waste, it has become the star of summer tables across Central Italy. For three consecutive evenings, from 7 PM to midnight, Piazza Giulio Cesare transforms into a large open-air kitchen where panzanella is showcased, prepared, and served in all its regional variations.

Three panzanellas compared: Roman, Tuscan, and Salento

The gastronomic heart of the festival lies in the comparison between the different souls of this dish. The Roman version focuses on well-seasoned bread, ripe tomatoes, and extra virgin olive oil; the Tuscan version revives the classic recipe with stale bread and summer vegetables; while the Salento variant brings the aromas of the South to the square, often featuring surprise preparations announced year by year. The stalls also offer charcuterie boards, assorted sandwiches, buffalo mozzarella, draft beer, quality wine, and summer aperitifs.

The «P-Day»: the three-evening formula

The organizers have dubbed the event «P-Day», a well-oiled formula that structures each evening: at 7 PM, the food stalls open for tastings of the three panzanella styles; at 8 PM, the square comes alive with aperitifs, background music, and social spaces designed for families, young people, and children; while from 9 PM, the stage hosts shows and live music, with different entertainment every night until the midnight closing. Admission is free, as is parking, a choice that makes the festival accessible to everyone and encourages attendance from Rome and neighboring towns.

Live music and entertainment for all

Since its very first edition, the festival has paired food with a rich entertainment program: DJ sets and vocalists, street performers including jugglers, stilt walkers, and fire-eaters, dance music revival nights, and live concerts. There are also moments designed for younger visitors, such as video game tournaments organized in past editions. It is this blend of taste and fun that has allowed the event to grow rapidly, turning the main square into a meeting point for the entire community.

San Cesareo, the town and its surroundings

San Cesareo is a town in the province of Rome, in the Lazio region, located along the Via Casilina about thirty kilometers from the capital, between the Castelli Romani and the Prenestini Mountains. Its location is particularly convenient: Piazza Giulio Cesare is located about two kilometers from the motorway exit, making the festival an easy destination for a night out. The Municipality of San Cesareo and local associations support the event as an opportunity to promote local products and the conviviality of the Lazio region.

A short but growing history

Born in August 2024 with a two-day debut sponsored by the Municipality, the Panzanella Festival expanded to three evenings as early as 2025 and solidified its formula in 2026 with its third edition, curated by the Pomodoro e Basilico Association. In just a few years, it has become one of the most anticipated summer events in the area east of Rome, capable of combining the memory of peasant cuisine with the pleasure of an authentic town square festival.
