About Buonabitacolo Carnival

Every February, Buonabitacolo transforms into a vast open-air stage. The Buonabitacolo Carnival brings allegorical papier-mâché floats, costumed groups, music, and entertainment to the town's streets. Born from the dedication of the Sorriso della Solidarietà association, this event blends festive celebration with charity, uniting the entire community of this small town in the Vallo di Diano, in the province of Salerno. It is an authentic, family-friendly, and free-entry local carnival, where the floats are handcrafted by volunteers.

A local carnival born from solidarity

In Buonabitacolo, a small town in the province of Salerno overlooking the Vallo di Diano plain, Carnival is more than just a masquerade party: it is the moment when the whole town comes together. The Buonabitacolo Carnival is promoted by the Sorriso della Solidarietà association, supported by the Il Sentiero cooperative, the Pro Loco, the youth forum, and dozens of volunteers, with the patronage of the municipal administration. Each edition is the result of months of shared work and is accompanied by a fundraiser for charitable causes: it is precisely this blend of joy and social commitment that makes the event more than just a simple parade.

Allegorical papier-mâché floats

The heart of the event lies in the allegorical floats, handcrafted in local warehouses by a group of about twenty artisans and volunteers, coordinated by Gianna Mandarano. The technique used is traditional papier-mâché, sometimes enhanced with special effects and moving mechanisms. Surrounding the floats are costumed groups: children, teenagers, and adults wear costumes based on the year's chosen theme, in a collective choreography that truly involves all ages. It is a labor of love that begins long before February and, more than the parade itself, serves to bind the community together.

A different theme every year

Each edition chooses a recognizable narrative thread, often inspired by the world of animation and fairy tales. In 2025, for its seventh edition, the town was dressed in the colors of the Looney Tunes; in 2026, the choice fell on Beauty and the Beast, the fairy tale made famous by the Disney classic, interpreted here as a metaphor for inclusion and hospitality—the beauty that must be sought beyond appearances. The edition's slogan, “Smile of Solidarity,” reflects the event's charitable vocation.

The route and atmosphere

The parades wind through the main streets of Buonabitacolo. In recent editions, the procession has started in the early afternoon from the sports facility area, reaching Piazza Agorà, where the party continues with music, entertainment, and shows. The rhythm is that of traditional Southern Italian village carnivals: speakers and sound systems on the floats, confetti and streamers, costumed groups dancing along the entire route, and families following on foot. There are no barriers separating the public from the performers: everyone parades together.

Buonabitacolo and the Vallo di Diano

Buonabitacolo is located in the far south of the Campania region, on the edge of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, just a few kilometers from the Certosa di San Lorenzo in Padula, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Carnival is part of a calendar of events that animates neighboring towns—Sala Consilina, Sassano, Teggiano, Padula—during the same weeks, representing one of the best opportunities to discover the Vallo di Diano outside the summer season, when the villages return to being frequented primarily by locals.

Why it's worth visiting

  • An authentic, non-touristy Carnival, made by residents for residents, yet open to everyone.
  • Handcrafted papier-mâché floats, a skill becoming increasingly rare in small towns.
  • Four days spread over two weeks, including Shrove Tuesday.
  • A free and family-friendly event, with entertainment dedicated to children.
  • A declared charitable purpose, which gives meaning to the entire organizational effort.

Visitors from outside the region will find this Carnival an excellent excuse for a weekend in the Vallo di Diano, exploring the Certosa di Padula, medieval villages, and Cilento cuisine, which is at its best in February with traditional rustic dishes.

Buonabitacolo Carnival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Buonabitacolo Carnival took place on February 8, 15, 17, and 22, featuring four afternoons of parades through the streets of Buonabitacolo. The chosen theme was “Beauty and the Beast,” the fairy tale made famous by the Disney classic and interpreted as an invitation to inclusion and hospitality. The slogan “Smile of Solidarity” highlighted the event's charitable purpose, with funds raised supporting the “Il Sorriso di Samuele” project.

“Beauty and the Beast” on the streets of Buonabitacolo

The 2026 Buonabitacolo Carnival chose one of the most beloved fairy tales to convey a precise message: beauty must be sought beyond appearances. Allegorical floats, elaborate costumes, and dedicated sets transformed the town center into a fairy-tale stage, with performers dressed as the story's characters parading behind the floats along the main streets of the town in the province of Salerno.

Four days of celebration

The calendar included four events spread over two weeks: February 8, 15, 17, and 22, 2026. Alongside the parades, there was entertainment, live music, and moments dedicated to children, families, and local associations. Musical guests for the edition included singer Silvio Celano, from Buonabitacolo, and the duo Very and Sasy.

The smile of solidarity

The edition's slogan was not just a slogan: the donations collected during the Carnival days were donated to “Il Sorriso di Samuele,” a fundraiser promoted in memory of a child who passed away at nine years old due to a rare genetic disease, to support the expansion of the pediatric hospice at the Gaslini Hospital in Genoa. An edition that confirmed the vocation of the Sorriso della Solidarietà association and the ability of this small town in the Vallo di Diano to combine spectacle, participation, and social commitment.
