An ancient rite of Brianza

Brusa la Giubiana is the Veduggio version of one of the most deeply rooted winter traditions in Lombardy. Every last Thursday of January, in numerous towns between Brianza, Milanese, and Como areas, the bonfire of the Giubiana is lit. This is a puppet representing winter and the fears of the year, which is set ablaze to usher in the good season. In Veduggio con Colzano, a municipality in the Province of Monza and Brianza, the rite is an eagerly awaited event by the entire community.

Children's parade and bonfire

The evening begins with a parade of schoolchildren, who accompany the puppet before it is burned. The Giubiana bonfire is then lit on the school lawn, in a collective moment that unites generations around the fire. It is the central and most symbolic part of the festival, capable of keeping alive a rural memory rooted in distant times.

A festival for the whole community

The event is organized by the town's associations with the patronage of the Municipality of Veduggio con Colzano. Around the bonfire, the Veduggio tradition includes moments of conviviality with the distribution of hot dishes and mulled wine, in an atmosphere of popular celebration that symbolically closes the heart of winter.
