The bread of the world as a symbol of meeting in the NoLo–Via Padova neighbourhood
The Bread Festival takes place at via Padova 116, at the San Giovanni Crisostomo parish, in the heart of the NoLo–Via Padova neighbourhood (Municipality 2), one of Milan's most multi-ethnic areas. Born in 2015 thanks to Marcella, a volunteer at the parish Caritas, the festival has grown to involve the entire fabric of the neighbourhood, transforming from a parish initiative into a major intercultural event.
The main theme is bread from around the world: about twenty associations and residents prepare traditional breads according to authentic recipes, reflecting the many origins of those who live in the neighbourhood. A veritable bread market is set up on the church steps, where you can taste leavened breads and specialities from every corner of the globe. It's a concrete and everyday way to bring different cultures into dialogue, starting from a universal gesture like sharing food.
The afternoon programme is full of activities for all ages: baking workshops, face painting by the Islamic Association of Milan, games of chance with the scouts of Agesci Milano 68, honey extraction demonstrations with volunteers from the Orti di Via Padova, and language and culture games with the Binari Italian School. The day concludes with a community dinner and live music.
The festival is organised by the parish together with the B-Cam Cooperative and the cultural aggregation project Sagrèt, involving about twenty local organisations. It's an example of how, in Milan, a neighbourhood festival can become a laboratory for coexistence and social cohesion, capable of enhancing the intercultural richness of NoLo and Via Padova.
