The January bonfire in the Cantù hamlet of Vighizzolo
In addition to the famous Giubiana in Piazza Garibaldi, Cantù also experiences the bonfire ritual in the hamlet of Vighizzolo, where the event has a more intimate and family-friendly dimension. At the Vighizzolo oratory, a January evening renews the tradition of the bonfire that burns the effigy of the old woman, symbolizing the departing winter.
The evening begins with dinner: risotto with luganega sausage and a good glass of wine warm up the guests before the highlight. At 9 PM, the Giubiana bonfire is lit in the oratory courtyard, accompanied by medieval marches from the Sbandieratori e Musici Lariani association, who liven up the celebration with music and spectacle.
The bonfire of the Giubiana of Vighizzolo is an event cherished by the inhabitants of the hamlet and the people of Cantù, who experience it as a moment of gathering in the heart of winter. The presence of the Sbandieratori e Musici Lariani adds a touch of historical folklore to a festival with peasant roots.
Vighizzolo, a hamlet of Cantù in the province of Como, retains a strong sense of community that is expressed in events like this. The Giubiana bonfire is an opportunity to discover a more intimate corner of Brianza, away from the major tourist flows.
The 2026 edition takes place at the Vighizzolo oratory. At 7:30 PM, dinner with risotto with luganega sausage and a good glass of wine; at 9:00 PM, the Giubiana bonfire is lit in the oratory courtyard, enlivened by the medieval marches of the Sbandieratori e Musici Lariani.
The event is distinct from the main Giubiana held in Piazza Garibaldi in Cantù.
