A Winter Peasant Festival

The feast of Saint Anthony Abbot in Taino, a small town in the province of Varese overlooking Lake Maggiore, is one of those anniversaries that preserve the ancient bond between the agricultural world and its rites. Saint Anthony is traditionally the protector of animals and livestock, and his feast marks, in the heart of winter, the anticipation of nature's awakening.

The Blessing, the Bonfire, and the Notes

The central moment is the blessing of the animals, to which participants can bring their four-legged friends. This is followed by writing small notes with prayers and wishes, entrusted to the saint and then burned in the large bonfire that is lit immediately after: a simple and evocative gesture, which brings the community together around the fire.

The Pizzoccherata at the Oratory

The evening concludes with conviviality with the pizzoccherata hosted at the Oratorio San Domenico Savio, on Via Europa. A dish from the Valtellina and Lombard tradition that warms the winter evening and gathers families and villagers.
