About Blessing of the Animals

Every January 17th, the feast day of Saint Anthony the Abbot, Ladispoli renews one of the most cherished traditions of the Roman coast: the blessing of the animals in Piazza Roberto Rossellini. Dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, and small pets arrive in the square accompanied by their families to receive the parish priest's blessing, followed by the distribution of blessed bread. A popular, free event open to all, organized by the Pro Loco in collaboration with the Municipality and the Santa Maria del Rosario parish.

An ancient tradition in the heart of Ladispoli

On January 17th, the Church commemorates Saint Anthony the Abbot, the hermit monk venerated for centuries as the protector of animals and the farming world. In Ladispoli, within the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital (Lazio), this anniversary translates into a highly anticipated event: the blessing of the animals in Piazza Roberto Rossellini, the urban living room of this seaside town overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The initiative is promoted by the Pro Loco of Ladispoli in collaboration with the Municipality of Ladispoli and the Santa Maria del Rosario parish. It is not a spectacular or commercial event, but a simple and deeply rooted community moment that brings together families, children, animal welfare volunteers, and curious onlookers in the square.

How the day unfolds

In the early afternoon, the square gradually fills up: dogs on leashes are the most numerous protagonists, but there is no shortage of cats in carriers, rabbits, hamsters, small birds, and, when conditions permit, horses and ponies that recall the ancient bond between Saint Anthony the Abbot and working animals. At 3:00 PM, the priest of the Santa Maria del Rosario parish imparts the blessing, accompanied by a short prayer dedicated to the animals.

At the end of the rite, blessed bread is distributed to all those present, a symbolic gesture that closes the ceremony and refers to the convivial dimension of popular Lazio festivals. The square then remains lively for a long time, amidst chatter, photographs, and the inevitable parade of four-legged friends.

Why Saint Anthony the Abbot

  • The patron saint of animals: in traditional iconography, Saint Anthony the Abbot is depicted with a tau-shaped staff, fire, and a piglet, symbols of his connection to rural life.
  • January 17th: in the farming calendar, this date marks the symbolic beginning of the agricultural year and the protection of stables and domestic animals.
  • A living rite: throughout Lazio, from inland villages to coastal towns, the blessing of the animals is one of the few winter traditions that continue to attract audiences of all ages.

An event for the whole family

Participation is free and open, with no registration required. Simply show up in the square with your pet, respecting common sense rules: leashes for dogs, carriers for cats and small animals, and attention to the coexistence of different species in a crowded space. For children, it is often the first contact with a popular religious festival, experienced outdoors and in an informal way.

Ladispoli in winter

Known primarily for the sea and the famous spring Artichoke Festival, Ladispoli shows a more intimate, local side in January. The blessing of the animals is an opportunity to discover the center around Piazza Rossellini, the winter promenade, and the nearby Etruscan countryside, just a few kilometers from Cerveteri and its UNESCO-listed necropolis. A small event that perfectly captures the identity of this part of the coast north of Rome: tradition, a sense of community, and square life.
