The May Day festival celebrating Virtù teramane, art, and live music
Bisenti Virtùosa is the festival that brings the village of Bisenti—a small town in the Val Fino valley in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo—to life every May 1st. Established in 2023 by the Pro Loco Bisenti "L. Panzone", the event dedicates an entire day to the signature dish of the Abruzzo spring, Virtù teramane, and has steadily become one of the most anticipated local gatherings at the start of the season.
At the heart of the festival is a lunch featuring Virtù, the historic Teramo soup traditionally prepared on May 1st. According to custom, housewives would empty their pantries at the end of winter, combining dried legumes, various types of pasta, cured meats, and the first fresh spring vegetables and herbs: a dish that is both rich and humble, symbolizing the change of seasons. In Bisenti, the Virtù are served in the town square, accompanied by other local specialties.
The day is about more than just gastronomy. The morning kicks off with a guided tour "discovering Bisenti", leading visitors through the streets and squares of the historic center. The village, nestled on a terrace along the Fino River, preserves the mother church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, a medieval tower that survived the ancient walls, the Antica Fontana, and the house traditionally linked to Pontius Pilate, who legend claims was born here. Bisenti is also known for its native Montonico grape variety, now a Slow Food Presidium.
The afternoon and evening are dedicated to live music: band concerts, tribute acts, DJ sets, and folk entertainment keep the party going until late. There is no shortage of food stalls serving beer, arrosticini, skewers, and cocktails, creating a vibrant atmosphere that brings residents and visitors together.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco Bisenti "L. Panzone" APS in collaboration with local entities and with the patronage of the Municipality of Bisenti. The stated goal is to make Bisenti Virtùosa a landmark event for the entire Teramo area, boosting local hospitality and inviting visitors to spend a full day exploring the village and its traditions.
The fourth edition of Bisenti Virtùosa, held on May 1st, 2026, on Via Principe di Piemonte (near the elementary school parking lot), offered a full day of tradition and music. At 10:30 AM, the guided tour "discovering Bisenti" began, followed by a welcome toast and aperitif at 12:30 PM, and the lunch featuring Virtù and other specialties starting at 1:00 PM, accompanied by music.
The musical lineup featured live performances by the bands Pleiades, Dream after Death, Kismet, and the Vasco Rossi tribute band Reloaded. Food stalls were available with beer, arrosticini, skewers, and cocktails. The event was organized by the Pro Loco Bisenti "L. Panzone" APS with the "Sopraffino" Consortium and the patronage of the Municipality of Bisenti.
