Two days of celebrations, conferences, and hikes to mark Bagnone's recognition as a CAI Mountain Village in Lunigiana
In the heart of Lunigiana, at the foot of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, the village of Bagnone (Massa-Carrara province, Tuscany) is celebrating a major milestone: its recognition as a Mountain Village by the Italian Alpine Club (CAI). On May 16th and 17th, 2026, the town comes alive with two days of celebrations, conferences, and hikesโmostly free of chargeโto honor a label that rewards landscape quality, cultural richness, and the community's commitment to combating rural depopulation.
The CAI Mountain Village project is not a product certification but a true community brand. It highlights small mountain towns that work to foster restanza (the desire to stay), promote slow, responsible, and year-round tourism, and protect their landscape and cultural heritage. Bagnone received this recognition in November 2025 during the first national gathering of CAI Mountain Villages, in the presence of Mayor Giovanni Guastalli and CAI General Vice President Giacomo Benedetti.
The inauguration involves the entire municipal territory, from the historic center of Bagnone to the hamlets of Treschietto and Compione, reaching up to the high-altitude mountain huts of the Apennines. Saturday is dedicated to conferences and activities in the village, including the ceremony to present the ViMont plaques to the Municipality and partner companies in Piazza Marconi. On Sunday, the event moves to the mountains for a hike organized by CAI Bagnone, followed by a convivial meal at altitude.
The event is part of the broader Discover Bagnone 2026 calendar, a season of walks and guided tours organized by Sigeric from May to October. Between castles, chestnut forests, high-altitude meadows, and ancient crafts, Bagnone presents itself as a gateway to authentic Lunigiana, where mountain traditions meet the warm hospitality of its inhabitants.
The inaugural edition on May 16th and 17th, 2026, celebrated Bagnone's entry into the Mountain Villages of the Italian Alpine Club. The festival unfolded between the historic center, the hamlets of Treschietto and Compione, and the Apennine mountain huts, alternating between official ceremonies, free activities for families, and a high-altitude hike.
Bagnone can be reached by car via the A15 Parma-La Spezia motorway (Aulla exit), then by following signs for inner Lunigiana. The nearest train station is Aulla Lunigiana, on the Parma-La Spezia line.
The INFOPOINT is located in Piazza Roma, where registration and meeting points for activities are held.
Many activities are free, but some (workshops, lunches) require booking. Info: CAI Bagnone Section ([email protected], tel. +39 338 5978691) and Sigeric ([email protected]).
