The Battipaglia festival commemorating the Allied landings of September 9, 1943
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the town of Battipaglia, in the province of Salerno, Avalanche Day is the annual September event that takes the Piana del Sele back to September 9, 1943, the day Allied forces landed on the coasts of Campania. Operation Avalanche was the largest amphibious operation in the Mediterranean and, in terms of strategic importance, the second largest of the entire Second World War after the Normandy landings. Approximately 100,000 British and 70,000 American soldiers landed between Pontecagnano, Battipaglia, and Paestum, paving the way for the liberation of Southern Italy.
The festival was conceived by the Mu.Bat Cultural Association, the digital and widespread museum of Battipaglia dedicated to the Battle of Salerno, and has been supported by the Municipality of Battipaglia since 2017. Since 2018, the project has expanded its reach to a network of municipalities in the province of Salerno, united by a protocol dedicated to shared historical memory: Altavilla Silentina, Battipaglia, Bellizzi, Campagna, Eboli, Montecorvino Pugliano, Montecorvino Rovella, Olevano sul Tusciano, Pontecagnano Faiano, and Salerno.
Over the years, the festival has received support from the Campania Region and the Ministry of Culture, which, through the National Fund for Historical Re-enactments, recognized the Operation Avalanche re-enactment as the best cultural project in the sector within the region. Since 2024, Avalanche Day has also been part of the European Commission's CERV - European Remembrance program, which supports its activities through 2026.
The most anticipated moment is the historical re-enactment at Lido Spineta, on the Battipaglia coastline, where part of the actual landing took place. The evening traditionally opens with the White Rose Ceremony, featuring students and local authorities, followed by a reconstruction of the operation's phases performed by specialized re-enactment groups such as Noi Soldati al Fronte 43-45 and History Living Group, who maintain philological accuracy in their uniforms, equipment, and encampments.
Alongside the re-enactment, Mu.Bat has developed a unique narrative format called Radio Onda, which weaves together music, readings, and dance. It features narration by Benedetta Gambale, artistic direction by Guglielmo Francese, choreography by Luca Calzolaro and Jack Squadritti, and musical accompaniment by the Mediterranean Youth Saxophone Orchestra.
Avalanche Day is more than just a single day of re-enactment; it is a calendar of events that spans the entire school year. Recurring activities include:
This approach makes Avalanche Day a rare example in the Italian re-enactment landscape: the costumed reconstruction is not an end in itself, but the public culmination of ongoing research, archival digitization, and international exchange.
The event is scheduled around the anniversary of the landings, in the first half of September. In 2025, the festival took place from September 9 to 13, with the re-enactment at Lido Spineta on the 13th, while in 2024, the reconstruction was held on September 14. Ceremonies and re-enactments take place outdoors on the beach and in public spaces; it is advisable to arrive early to secure a spot along the coast and to follow the official Mu.Bat channels, which publish the detailed program closer to the event.
Official dates and the program for the 2026 edition of Avalanche Day in Battipaglia, in the province of Salerno, have not yet been communicated. This page will be updated as soon as the Mu.Bat Cultural Association publishes the calendar on its channels.
Known elements indicate a fully active project: the Operation Avalanche commemorations are part of the European CERV - European Remembrance program with support covering the 2024-2026 triennium, and in April 2026, the partner network met in Thessaloniki for the international conference "Voices of Liberation".
As in previous years, the event is expected to take place in the first half of September, around the anniversary of the Allied landings on September 9, 1943, featuring commemorative ceremonies and the historical re-enactment on the Lido Spineta coastline. However, this is a projection based on past editions; please verify dates with the organizers.
Battipaglia is located in the Piana del Sele, about twenty kilometers from Salerno. By train, Battipaglia station is a major hub on the Tyrrhenian line, served by regional and long-distance connections. By car, take the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway (Battipaglia exit). The nearest airport is Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi in Pontecagnano. The Lido Spineta, where the re-enactment is held, can be reached from the city center by taking the road toward the coast; on event evenings, it is recommended to arrive early to find parking.
Ceremonies and re-enactments take place in public spaces, generally in the evening. The detailed program, including precise times and locations, is released by the Mu.Bat Association in the days leading up to the event.
The re-enactment is held on the beach, so comfortable shoes and a light jacket for the evening breeze are recommended. As this is a commemorative event, the White Rose Ceremony should be attended with the respect due to a moment of remembrance.
