The Bethlehem of two thousand years ago comes to life in the alleys of this Ciociaria village
The Atina Living Nativity is one of the most heartfelt religious re-enactments in the Comino Valley, in the heart of the Ciociaria region. Each year, between late December and Epiphany, the historic center of the town of Atina, in the province of Frosinone, turns into a grand open-air stage where the birth of Jesus is brought to life. This is not merely a show, but a collective performance involving the entire community: adults, young people, and children dress as Nativity characters, creating an emotional journey through the town's streets and squares.
Atina's ancient alleys, with their stone houses and medieval doorways, provide the perfect backdrop to recreate the atmosphere of Bethlehem two thousand years ago. Along the route, visitors encounter shepherds with their flocks, the Three Wise Men journeying with their gifts, angels, Roman censors, and workshops of ancient trades. The scent of spices, the sounds of the inns, and the songs of the catechism children guide visitors to the manger scene, where the mystery of the Nativity unfolds. The event is curated by the Santa Maria Assunta Parish with the collaboration of the Pro Loco and dozens of volunteers.
The Living Nativity is the most emotional highlight of ยซAtina, Borgo del Nataleยป, a rich calendar of events organized by the Municipality of Atina and the Pro Loco. From the grand opening on December 8th, with the lighting of the tree and decorations in Piazza Saturno and the opening of the Christmas markets, to the arrival of the Befana at Epiphany, the village comes alive with concerts, shows, craft stalls, and local products. The Ducal Palace hosts musical performances, while the squares welcome guests of all ages in a festive atmosphere that lasts throughout the holiday season.
A visit to the nativity is also an opportunity to discover the local food and wine. Atina is famous for its DOC wine and the prized Atina Cannellini Bean PDO, which take center stage in tastings and dedicated events during the Christmas period. Local products, oils, cheeses, and traditional Ciociaria sweets accompany visitors on a journey that blends faith, culture, and flavor.
Born from the initiative of the parish and grown over the years into a staple of the Atina Christmas season, the Living Nativity represents a moment of strong cohesion for the village community. Each edition attracts visitors from across the province of Frosinone and the Lazio region, drawn by the authenticity of the staging and the beauty of Atina's historic center, one of the most characteristic villages in the Lazio region.
The 2026 Atina Living Nativity took place on January 4th in the historic center, bringing the streets and squares of the village to life with the representation of the birth of Jesus. The event was part of the "Atina, Christmas Village" calendar, the holiday program organized by the Municipality of Atina and the Pro Loco.
