Three July evenings where the historic center of Perdifumo turns into an open-air museum
Every July, the small village of Perdifumo, in the province of Salerno, hosts Arte Viva: a festival that, over three consecutive evenings, turns its historic center into a true open-air museum. The artworks are not confined to an exhibition hall but are scattered along the urban path, nestled among narrow alleys, arches, small squares, and scenic viewpoints overlooking the Cilento hills.
The concept is simple and effective: visitors don't just «visit an exhibition»; they walk through the village and encounter art where the town truly lives. Alongside the works, descriptive panels guide the visitor, and most importantly, the artists are present, mingling with the crowd and happy to discuss their work. This format makes the experience accessible even to those who do not usually frequent contemporary art galleries.
The historic center becomes a continuous itinerary to be explored leisurely in the evening hours, as the light fades and the village lights up. The choice to use alleys, squares, and historic corners as exhibition spaces is not merely a scenic trick: it is the way the community of Perdifumo tells its own story, creating a dialogue between the language of contemporary art and the village's stone architecture.
The festival is promoted by Arte Viva and Arte Viva Young together with the Pro Loco Perdifumo e Frazioni, the association chaired by Agostino Pisano that drives much of the municipality's cultural calendar. The presence of a «Young» section speaks volumes about the initiative's spirit: involving younger generations, having them work alongside artists, and giving the village an active role rather than just acting as a backdrop.
Since its first edition, the initiative has been held under the patronage of the Municipality of Perdifumo and within the context of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, with stated goals that go beyond the event itself: to enhance the natural and historical heritage of the area, promote sustainable tourism, and combat the depopulation of inland villages.
The first edition took place from July 19 to 21, 2024, featuring art exhibitions, artistic performances, live music, and a convivial buffet. In 2025, Arte Viva returned from July 11 to 13, with evening hours from 7:00 PM to midnight, adding music, singing, and a book presentation to the exhibition. For 2026, the event was scheduled for July 10, 11, and 12, maintaining the three-day format dedicated to art, culture, and the territory.
Perdifumo is a municipality of just under two thousand inhabitants, covering about 24 square kilometers, which includes the hamlets of Camella, Giungatelle, Mercato Cilento, and Vatolla. We are in the hilly Cilento, a short distance from the coast but already in a landscape of olive groves, woods, and small stone-built settlements: a context that in Campania well represents the Italy of minor villages, where the cultural summer is often the main occasion to bring people back to the squares.
For the visitor, Arte Viva is therefore two things at once: an art festival and a perfect excuse to discover a village that, outside of the July evenings, remains very quiet.
The same Pro Loco Perdifumo e Frazioni organizes Perdifumo Porte Aperte in August, another historic event of the village, which opens the doors of ancient homes to exhibitions, crafts, folk music, and tastings. Those planning a stay in Cilento spanning both events will find a particularly rich summer calendar for a municipality of this size.
From July 10 to 12, 2026, the historic center of Perdifumo, in the province of Salerno, hosted the new edition of Arte Viva. Three days dedicated to art, culture, and the territory, built around the festival's now-recognizable formula: the village becoming an open-air museum, with artworks placed along alleys, small squares, and historic corners instead of inside a closed exhibition space.
The route was designed as an immersive and accessible experience: artworks displayed outdoors, descriptive panels for support, and the presence of artists among the public, in an atmosphere that blends contemporary creativity with the local identity of Cilento.
The edition was promoted by Arte Viva, Arte Viva Young, and the Pro Loco Perdifumo e Frazioni, with the stated goal of strengthening the sense of community and enhancing the natural and architectural heritage of Cilento, in Campania.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition was not released in full by public sources. What was communicated by the organizers concerns the general structure of the event, spread over the three evenings of July 10, 11, and 12, 2026:
In previous editions, the event took place in the evening and featured live music and book presentations alongside the exhibition.
Arte Viva takes place in the historic center of Perdifumo (84060, province of Salerno), with evening activities spread over three days in July. In previous editions, the opening hours were from 7:00 PM until midnight.
Perdifumo can be reached by car via the provincial roads of the Cilento hills, a short distance from the Cilento coast; the reference railway stations are those on the Tyrrhenian line in Cilento, from which one can continue by car or local bus services.
For dates, updated schedules, and any entry requirements, it is best to refer to the communications from the Pro Loco Perdifumo e Frazioni and local Cilento news outlets, which publish the program in the weeks leading up to the event.
