A walk through Roman history and the Sibillini landscapes in Monte Rinaldo
The Archaeological Walk of May 1st is the event with which the Municipality of Monte Rinaldo, a small village in the province of Fermo in the Marche region, symbolically opens the summer season. As part of the regional initiative Passeggiate di Marca (Marche Walks), the event invites residents and visitors to rediscover the territory on foot, combining slow walking with ancient history and the panoramas of the Sibillini Mountains and the Aso valley.
The itinerary, about 6 km long (round trip with a 150-meter elevation gain), crosses the historic fabric of the town and descends along the ancient road to the archaeological area La Cuma. Here lie the remains of an important Roman sanctuary from the Republican era (2nd century BC), with the temple dedicated to Jupiter and an imposing colonnaded portico: one of the most significant testimonies of the Romanization of the Piceno area. The walk is guided by expert Stefano Properzi, who accompanies participants by narrating the landscape, history, and traditions of the territory.
The day is not just about hiking: along the route, there are moments of art and performance, with shows designed to engage both adults and children, and a stop for a packed lunch in the tourist reception area of La Cuma, with the terrace of the Roman sanctuary as an ideal backdrop. Recent editions have also included educational workshops for children, organized by the operators of Cumarcheologia.
The Archaeological Walk is now a tradition that enhances the identity of the village of Monte Rinaldo and the entire Marche region, offering participants an outdoor day where history, nature, and community come together.
The 2026 edition celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Monte Rinaldo Archaeological Walk, as part of the Passeggiate di Marca. The program included the gathering at 9:30 AM in Via Roma, the start of the excursion at 10:00 AM (approx. 6 km, 150 m elevation gain) guided by Stefano Properzi, at 11:00 AM the performance "Dolly Bomba โ BRAINSTORMING" by Piero Massimo Macchini, a packed lunch at 12:30 PM in the La Cuma area, and return in the early afternoon.
Due to ongoing enhancement works, guided tours inside the archaeological area were not available, but the terrace of the Roman sanctuary served as a backdrop for the day. Participation was free with mandatory booking.
Monte Rinaldo is located in the hinterland of the province of Fermo. By car, it can be reached from the A14 Pedaso or Porto San Giorgio exit, continuing inland along the Aso valley. The meeting point is in Via Roma, in the historic center.
