About Aosta Valley Autonomy Festival

Every year, at the end of February, the Aosta Valley celebrates its Autonomy with an institutional ceremony in the Sala Viglino of the Regional Palace in Aosta. It is the moment when the region commemorates the achievement of self-government and the Special Statute, bestows the Amis and Chevaliers de l'Autonomie honours upon those who have distinguished themselves for the territory, and reaffirms its linguistic and cultural identity in the heart of the Alps.

The Aosta Valley Autonomy Festival

The Aosta Valley Autonomy Festival is the institutional celebration with which the Autonomous Region of the Aosta Valley commemorates its Autonomy and the Special Statute. The ceremony is held in the Maria Ida Viglino Hall of the Regional Palace, in the centre of Aosta, in the presence of the highest regional authorities and local bodies.

The roots of Autonomy

Aosta Valley Autonomy has its roots in 1946, with the lieutenancy decrees, and was consolidated with the Special Statute of 1948, which enshrines the region's particularism: Italian-French bilingualism, the protection of traditions, and self-government. The Festival is the moment when this heritage is remembered and passed down, also looking to the challenges of the future.

Amis and Chevaliers de l'Autonomie

The heart of the ceremony is the awarding of the Amis de la Vallée d'Aoste and Chevaliers de l'Autonomie honours: recognitions given to personalities who, in various fields — culture, business, science, mountaineering, art — have contributed to promoting the identity and prestige of the Aosta Valley in Italy and worldwide. The ceremony is enhanced by musical interludes entrusted to local choirs and ensembles.
