The religious festival of the Piccianello district in Matera
The Festa dell'Annunziata di Piccianello is an event of strong popular identity for the Piccianello neighbourhood of Matera, celebrated in honor of Maria Santissima Annunziata. Promoted by the neighbourhood parish, the festival combines religious devotion and community participation in one of the most vibrant areas of the city.
The program opens in the morning with holy masses and continues in the afternoon with the rosary and the solemn mass, presided over by the archbishop. The heart of the festival is the procession with the sacred image of Maria SS. Annunziata through the neighbourhood streets, accompanied by the Complesso Bandistico Cittร di Matera. The day concludes with a fireworks display at the Fabbrica del Carro, the same symbolic location linked to the Festa della Bruna.
It is a festival that tells the most authentic neighbourhood dimension of Matera, far from the major tourist flows: faith lived in community, bands, lights, and fireworks that illuminate Piccianello. An opportunity to discover the popular face of the Sassi City.
The festival takes place on Sunday, May 24, 2026, in the Piccianello district of Matera, at the church of Maria Santissima Annunziata. The program alternates religious celebrations and popular festival moments, culminating in the evening procession and the pyrotechnic display.
The Piccianello district is located in the modern area of Matera, reachable by car and on foot from the centre.
Free participation.
Wide range of accommodation in the centre and in the Sassi of Matera.
