About Anniversary of the Battle of Magenta

Every year, on the first Sunday of June, Magenta relives its most famous historical page: the Battle of June 4, 1859, when Franco-Piedmontese troops defeated the Austrians, giving a decisive boost to the Risorgimento. Amidst costumed re-enactors, historical parades, cannons, and horses, the city transforms into an open-air theatre. The anniversary opens the Magentino June, a month of cultural events, and attracts history enthusiasts and re-enactment groups from all over Europe.

A Battle That Made History

On June 4, 1859, in the vicinity of Magenta (Province of Milan), the French army of Napoleon III and its Piedmontese allies defeated the Austrian forces in one of the decisive battles of the Second Italian War of Independence. That victory paved the way for the allies' entry into Milan and marked a fundamental stage of the Risorgimento. The memory of those events is so deeply rooted that the color magenta owes its name to this very battle.

The Historical Re-enactment

Every year, the city commemorates the anniversary with a grand historical re-enactment: over one hundred and fifty re-enactors, including French groups, parade in Risorgimento uniforms with cannons and horses, recreating camps, maneuvers, and moments of the battle. The historical parade crosses the city center and culminates in the Risorgimento ball in Piazza Liberazione, while the Memorial Antonello Rota features a charge competition with muzzle-loading firearms.

Magentino June

The anniversary is not an isolated event: it opens the Magentino June, the cultural program that accompanies the entire month with exhibitions, meetings, and initiatives. Among these, the Children's June involves hundreds of students from the city's schools, passing on the historical memory of the territory to new generations.

The Battle Museum

The heart of Magenta's memory is the Battle Museum of Magenta, which offers special openings for the celebrations. Documents, uniforms, and memorabilia recount the events of 1859 and their significance in the path towards the Unification of Italy, making the visit a valuable complement to the re-enactment.
