About Ammugliatiello Festival

Every summer, the Ferrarisi district of Ponte, a small town in the Sannio area of the Benevento province, gathers around the glowing embers of the Ammugliatiello Festival. The star of the show is the ammugliatiello: a traditional roll of milk-fed lamb offal, skewered and roasted with bay leaves, garlic, parsley, cheese, and chili pepper—a humble peasant dish that has become a true symbol of local identity. The event features three nights of food stalls, folk music, ballroom dancing, and fireworks, organized by the local Pro Loco with the support of the Municipality of Ponte and Coldiretti Benevento.

A village feast born from the embers

In the Ferrarisi district of the Municipality of Ponte, in the province of Benevento, the Ammugliatiello Festival is the annual summer event that brings the entire community out into the streets. This is no manufactured event; it is rooted in the daily life of the shepherds and farming families of the Sannio region, who wasted nothing of the lamb and transformed the humblest cuts into a dish meant for slow cooking over an open fire. Today, that same tradition is the heart of three nights of gastronomy, music, and shared memories in one of the most authentic inland areas of Campania.

What is ammugliatiello?

The name comes from the local dialect: ammugliatiello roughly translates to "little ball of yarn," as the milk-fed lamb offal is wrapped and twisted onto a skewer to form a compact roll. Before cooking, it is seasoned with bay leaves, garlic, parsley, cheese, and chili pepper, then roasted on a spit or grill, turned patiently to ensure it remains tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. It is a preparation that requires skilled hands and time; it is rarely found outside the festival, making the Ferrarisi gathering the only chance of the year for many visitors to taste it prepared the traditional way.

The food stalls

The heart of the event is the food area, which opens early in the evening and stays active until late at night. In addition to the ammugliatiello, prepared and cooked on-site by volunteers, past editions have featured:

  • sausages and grilled meats;
  • fried potatoes and stuffed peppers;
  • local Sannio wine and draft beer;
  • traditional rustic desserts.

The service is managed entirely by local volunteers, and the queue in front of the grills is part of the experience: you wait while chatting, just like at any successful village festival.

Folk music, ballroom dancing, and fireworks

Every night features its own stage. Over the years, the festival has hosted folk music groups, tammurriata performers, Neapolitan pop bands, and ballroom dance orchestras, with the dance floor filling up with couples of all ages. The traditional finale is a fireworks display late in the evening, which illuminates the hills around Ferrarisi and has become the most anticipated moment for families.

Celebrating rural culture

The festival goes beyond just the food. Recent editions have always reserved space for "rural culture," including a conference dedicated to local agriculture and its future, as well as the blessing of agricultural machinery, a deeply felt moment for local farmers. This is not just superficial folklore: the collaboration with Coldiretti Benevento and the support of the Municipality of Ponte reflect a community that uses the festival to discuss their work, the depopulation of inland areas, and the value of Sannio's typical products.

Ponte, between the Telesina Valley and the Sannio hills

Ponte is a town of just over two thousand inhabitants, located at an altitude of about 147 meters. It grew around an ancient Roman bridge over the Alenta stream along the route that connected Benevento to Rome through the Telesina Valley. Independent since 1913, it includes seven districts—Canale, Colli, Ferrarisi, Monte, Piana, Puglia, and Staglio—and celebrates its patron saint, Saint John Nepomucene, on May 16th. It is a natural stop for those visiting the Benevento Sannio area, surrounded by vineyards, villages, and scenic roads, just twenty minutes from the provincial capital.

Who organizes it

The event is promoted by the Pro Loco "La Rinascente" together with the Ammugliatiello Festival Committee, with the support of the Municipality of Ponte and the collaboration of Coldiretti Benevento. The organization is entirely volunteer-based, and updates are published on the festival's dedicated Facebook page.

When it takes place

Traditionally, the Ammugliatiello Festival is held in the second half of August, around the Ferragosto holiday: the 2024 and 2025 editions took place from August 16th to 18th. Official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been published by the organizers; it is advisable to check the Pro Loco channels and the festival's Facebook page before traveling.

Ammugliatiello Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Ammugliatiello Festival does not yet have official dates published. The event in the Ferrarisi district of Ponte, in the province of Benevento, has taken place in recent years in the second half of August, from the 16th to the 18th, and Sannio festival calendars generally indicate it in the month of August, advising visitors to verify the dates. We recommend checking the festival's Facebook page and the Pro Loco channels before planning your visit.

2026 Edition: dates not yet official

At the time of checking, no official announcement has been published by the Pro Loco or the Municipality of Ponte regarding the dates of the 2026 Ammugliatiello Festival. Local sources in the Sannio region, which in previous years released the program as early as June, have not yet provided news about the event, and regional festival calendars list the event in the month of August with an explicit recommendation to verify the dates.

Traditionally, the festival occupies three nights in the second half of August in the Ferrarisi district, with food stalls dedicated to ammugliatiello, live music, and a final fireworks display. As soon as the organizers publish the dates and program, this page will be updated.

Practical information — Ammugliatiello Festival

How to get there

By car: from the SS 372 Telesina road, take the exit for Ponte, then follow signs for the Ferrarisi district; from Benevento, take the SS 88 towards Casalduni-Ponte (about 20 minutes). By train: Benevento Centrale station, then provincial bus lines or taxi. By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, about an hour and a half drive away.

Parking

Ferrarisi is a small district: parking is available along the roads in the festival area; it is best to arrive early on busy nights.

Costs

Village festivals in the Sannio region generally do not have an entrance fee: costs are limited to the food and drinks purchased at the stalls. For updated prices and opening hours of the food area, it is best to consult the festival's Facebook page.

Tips

August evenings in the hills can be cool after midnight: a light sweatshirt is recommended. The ammugliatiello should be enjoyed as soon as it is taken off the grill, so it is worth arriving when the stalls open. For those wishing to stay overnight, accommodation is concentrated between Benevento, Telese Terme, and the agritourisms of the Telesina Valley.
