The Ambrosian Carnival of Cernusco sul Naviglio, with costume parades, workshops, and fun for children
In Cernusco sul Naviglio, in the province of Milan, Carnival follows the Ambrosian calendar: the festival falls a week later than Rome's Carnival, according to the liturgical tradition of the Milan diocese. The Ambrosian Fat Saturday is the highlight, when the town's streets fill with masks, colors, and music for one of the most beloved festivals by the residents of Cernusco.
The day begins with a gathering at the oratory and continues with the costume parade accompanied by a street band of musicians and dancers. Creative workshops and face painting are organized for children in the central squares, while theatrical and street performances animate Piazza Unità d'Italia. The festival concludes with street food, music, and the award ceremony for the best costumes.
The Ambrosian Carnival of Cernusco is organized by the Pro Loco Città di Cernusco sul Naviglio together with the town's oratories and with the support of the municipal administration. Participation is free, and the event has a strong community spirit: every year it involves associations, schools, and families in a day of widespread celebration throughout the town's streets.
Part of the Lombard and Ambrosian Carnival tradition, the Carnival of Cernusco sul Naviglio is an opportunity to experience the authentic spirit of this festival in the Martesana region, a few kilometers from Milan. Amidst confetti, masks, and workshops, it is an event that renews the bond between the town and its traditions each year.
The 2026 edition of the Ambrosian Carnival of Cernusco sul Naviglio is held on Saturday, February 21st, with the theme "NOFROST" inspired by winter sports and the Milan-Cortina Olympics. The day alternates between a parade, workshops for children, theatrical performances, and street food, along a route that crosses the central squares. The event is organized by UPG Oratorio SACER Beato Carlo Gnocchi and Impronte Diverse, in collaboration with the municipal administration and the Pro Loco.
Cernusco sul Naviglio is connected to Milan by the M2 metro line (Cernusco sul Naviglio stop). By car, it can be reached from the Tangenziale Est and the SP103 Cassanese.
