Philosophy, literature, art, and music in Cardile di Gioi, within the Cilento National Park
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Alef Cilento Festival takes place in Cardile, a small village in the municipality of Gioi, in the province of Salerno, located in the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. Established in 2024 on the initiative of the "Lu Vucenanzo" Library, the festival is designed as a cultural hub dedicated to contemporary thought, where philosophy, literature, visual arts, and music meet in one of the most secluded villages of inland Campania. It is not a top-down event: it was born within the local community and finds its audience there, alongside the many visitors who travel up from the coast to the Cilento hinterland during the summer.
Alef is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet and evokes the idea of a beginning that already contains everything else: knowledge, art, and life. This image forms the guiding thread of the event, summarized by the organizers in the phrase "philosophy is life." It is not a closed academic conference, but an open dialogue between scholars, artists, and residents, held in the village amphitheater, the library spaces, and along the paths surrounding Cardile.
Each edition spans several days and alternates moments of reflection, performance, and conviviality. Activities featured in previous editions include:
One of the stated goals of the Alef Festival is to counteract the depopulation of the southern inland areas by showing that culture can generate sustainable economy. The Cilento Park is not portrayed as a limitation, but as a living and dynamic resource: a world archaeological heritage site, a biosphere reserve, a geopark, and—thanks to the Mediterranean Diet—an intangible cultural heritage. This leads to workshops dedicated to local businesses, from honey to olive oil, from medicinal herbs to ancient grains, and traditional textile fibers.
The first edition was held from August 6 to 8, 2024, with the theme "The Eleatic Legacy: The Relevance of Parmenides," a tribute to the nearby Elea-Velia and the philosophical school that flourished there; guests included the historian of philosophy Lucia Palpacelli from the University of Macerata and the writer Giuseppe Lupo. The second edition, from July 31 to August 3, 2025, focused on the theme "Philosophy and Environment" and was accompanied by the opening of a permanent art gallery with the collective exhibition "Ritornerai" (You Will Return).
The festival is promoted by the "Lu Vucenanzo" APS Library of Cardile, together with the San Giovanni Bosco Oratory, the local Catholic Action, and the parish. The artistic direction is entrusted to Valentina Pilerci. The event has collaborated with Legambiente and professors from the Universities of Salerno, Salento, the Catholic University of Brescia, and Macerata, as well as various Cilento publishing houses.
Those who come to Cardile find a village-scale festival where you can listen to a philosophy lecture at sunset, attend a concert under the stars, and set off for a hike in the woods the next morning. It is an opportunity to discover a different side of the Cilento—away from the beach—made of stone villages, trails, artisan knowledge, and home cooking, just a short distance from the archaeological sites of Velia and Paestum.
At the time of writing, there are no official announcements regarding the dates, theme, or program for the third edition of the Alef Cilento Festival. The official festival website and the local Cilento press have not yet released information for 2026.
The reference remains the calendar of previous editions, both held between late July and early August in Cardile, a village of Gioi, in the province of Salerno. The established formula alternates philosophy and literature meetings, book presentations, evening concerts, creative workshops, exhibitions, excursions in the Cilento National Park, and tastings of local products.
Those wishing to attend can follow updates on the website aleffestival.it and on the event's social media pages, where in previous seasons the full program was released a few weeks before the opening, following the traditional press conference.
Cardile is a village in the municipality of Gioi, in the inland Cilento, accessible by car from the SS18 road with a detour towards Vallo della Lucania and then along the provincial roads leading up to Gioi. The most convenient train station is Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo, on the Tyrrhenian line; from there, a car or local bus service is required. Reference airport: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi, or alternatively Naples-Capodichino.
The organizers have not released an official price list: for meetings and concerts, it is advisable to check access methods and potential booking requirements on the festival's official channels, particularly for workshops and excursions, which usually have limited capacity.
Accommodation in Cardile and Gioi consists mainly of small B&Bs, holiday homes, and farmhouses (agriturismi). Many visitors choose to stay on the Cilento coast, between Ascea, Casal Velino, and Pisciotta, reaching the village in the evening.
Bring suitable shoes for walking and a light sweater: evenings in the hills can be cool even in mid-summer. It is worth combining your visit with the historic center of Gioi and the nearby archaeological sites of Velia.
