About Alburni Folk

The Alburni Folk Festival brings two days entirely dedicated to the traditional music and dance of Southern Italy to Sicignano degli Alburni. Organized by the Pro Loco Monti Alburni APS, the event alternates afternoon workshops on tarantella, pizzica, and tammurriata with evening concerts featuring groups from Campania and Calabria. It is a participatory event where you first learn to dance and then head to the square until late at night, with a food area dedicated to local flavors.

A festival born from the musical roots of the Alburni

The Alburni Folk Festival is the event that the Municipality of Sicignano degli Alburni, in the province of Salerno, dedicates to the oral tradition music and dance of Southern Italy. It is not just a series of concerts: the event's approach is explicitly educational and participatory, with a program strictly divided into afternoon workshops and evening concerts. Those who arrive in the afternoon learn the steps and figures of a dance; those who stay in the evening see them performed live by those who have been carrying on that tradition for years.

The protagonists are groups and masters linked to the traditions of the Alburni area, Campania, and Calabria: a cultural triangle that allows for the comparison of different but related repertoires in just two days, from the local tarantella to the Salento pizzica, from the Vesuvian tammurriata to the dances of the Calabrian Reventino.

Workshops: learning tradition through dance

The daytime heart of the festival is the workshops, open to everyone and not reserved for expert dancers. Each afternoon offers two sessions, at 5:00 PM and 6:30 PM, led by specialized teachers and associations. The focus is on basic steps, rhythm, and the relationship between dance partners and musicians: an approach that restores folk dance to its original function as a collective language rather than a performance for the few.

  • Tarantella degli Alburni โ€” the local dance, traditionally performed at village festivals at the foot of the mountain
  • Traditional Pizzica Pizzica โ€” the Salento repertoire in its couple-dance form
  • Tammurriata โ€” the drum and singing of the Campanian tradition
  • Traditional Dance of the Reventino โ€” Calabrian forms, often little known outside the region

Musical evenings

From 9:30 PM, the festival changes pace and opens up to a wider audience. The concerts follow one another without long breaks: a first group opens the evening, and a second carries it on until night. The repertoire remains that of live folk music, with accordions, frame drums, battente guitars, bagpipes, and vocals, including a narrative element that introduces the songs and explains their origins. This is one of the most successful features of the festival: the audience does not just watch, but understands what they are listening to.

Sicignano degli Alburni, the gateway to the mountains

Sicignano degli Alburni rises in the northern part of the Alburni Mountains massif, within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The village, dominated by the remains of a medieval castle, overlooks the Tanagro valley and is one of the most convenient access points to the limestone plateau that locals have always called the "Dolomites of the South." Hosting a folk music festival here is no coincidence: the Alburni communities have long preserved a repertoire of work songs, begging songs, and festive songs that is among the most interesting in inland Campania.

Festival attendees can easily combine the musical trip with a day of hiking: the Castelcivita Caves, the Sant'Angelo a Fasanella plateau, and the trails leading up to the Alburni peaks are just a few kilometers away, as are the villages of Petina, Postiglione, and Controne, the latter famous for its beans.

Organizers and atmosphere

The event is curated by the Pro Loco Monti Alburni APS, the same association that enlivens the Sicignano calendar with popular events like the Chestnut Festival and the Cammenanne Spuzzuliann. The organization is typical of Campanian Pro Loco associations: voluntary, family-oriented, with a food area accompanying the evenings by offering local dishes and products. Admission is designed for families and those arriving from neighboring towns, in a village festival atmosphere rather than a large commercial event.

Why it is worth the trip

  • A dense program in just two days, with four workshops and four concerts
  • A very affordable participation cost for workshops compared to industry standards
  • The opportunity to compare Campanian and Calabrian traditions in the same weekend
  • An exceptional landscape setting, between the Cilento National Park and the Tanagro valley
  • A chance to discover a village in the Salerno hinterland off the mass tourism circuits

Alburni Folk โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Alburni Folk Festival took place in Sicignano degli Alburni on Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19, with two days entirely dedicated to traditional music and dance. The dense and well-structured program alternated afternoon workshops from 5:00 PM and evening concerts from 9:30 PM, featuring groups and masters linked to the traditions of the Alburni, Campania, and Calabria. There was also a food area dedicated to local products.

Two days of tradition between Campania and Calabria

The 2026 edition of the Alburni Folk Festival confirmed the structure that makes the event recognizable: afternoons of training and evenings of concerts, without overlaps. On Saturday, July 18, the day opened with the Tarantella degli Alburni, the local repertoire, before moving on to the Salento pizzica pizzica; on Sunday, July 19, the journey continued with the Campanian tammurriata and the dances of the Reventino, brought to Sicignano by a Calabrian association.

The evenings featured four concerts in total, in a two-appointment-per-evening formula that kept the audience in the square until late at night. The presentations entrusted to Pietro Balsamo accompanied the listening by explaining the origin of the songs and the context of the traditions performed, while the food area allowed for extending the evening between sets.
