Italy's oldest 24-hour relay race returns to Belluno for its 50th edition
The 24 Ore di San Martino is one of the most beloved sporting events in Belluno, the capital of the province of the same name at the foot of the Dolomites. It is a relay race that lasts for 24 uninterrupted hours: registered teams take turns on the track of the multi-purpose stadium, accumulating kilometers day and night until the finish line. It is the oldest race of its kind still in operation in Italy.
The event has its roots in 1974, when it was organized as a form of protest to demand adequate sports facilities for the city. Since then, it has grown to become a defining event for the people of Belluno, uniting competition, social gathering, and fundraising for charitable causes. Behind the organization is the Pro Loco Pieve Castionese APS, supported by local associations.
The 24 Ore is not just about competition: a true village festival develops around the track, with stands, music, and entertainment that accompany teams and spectators throughout the entire event. In recent years, the program has been enriched with events dedicated to younger participants, to involve new generations in the local running tradition.
After the hiatus of the 2024 and 2025 editions, due to the construction work on the new municipal sports complex in Belluno, the event returns in 2026 to celebrate its 50th edition in the renovated facility, which will offer improved logistics and services for both athletes and spectators.
The 2026 edition marks the grand return of the 24 Ore di San Martino after the break in 2024 and 2025, and coincides with the historic milestone of the 50th edition. The decision to postpone the half-century celebrations was linked to the desire to inaugurate the event at the new municipal sports complex in Belluno.
The core remains the 24-hour relay race, with teams taking turns on the stadium track to accumulate the most kilometers. Alongside the main event, a section dedicated to younger participants is planned, demonstrating the commitment to passing on the tradition.
The detailed schedule and list of teams will be published on the official website in the weeks leading up to the race.
