An evening of street bands in Piazza IV Novembre, Sassinoro, in the Benevento Sannio region
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Sassinoro, a small town of just over six hundred residents in the northern part of the Benevento province, the evening of «Quando impazza la banda in piazza» has long been one of the most anticipated summer events. Piazza IV Novembre, the village hub, is cleared of cars and transformed into an open-air stage: brass instruments, saxophones, and percussion from street bands take over the public space, drawing the audience into a long, roaming concert that winds through the alleys and doorways of the historic center.
This isn't a concert for sitting down. Here, the music is played on the move: the musicians march, stop, start again, and the crowd follows. Historically, the event takes place around August 9th, kicking off in the late afternoon around 6:00 PM and continuing late into the night with toasts and impromptu dancing. It is a community festival in the truest sense, where the boundaries between stage and audience simply vanish.
The festival is a direct expression of the Associazione Musicale Città di Sassinoro, an institution with roots reaching back to the early 20th century. After disbanding during World War I, the band was reconstituted in the 1920s as the «Musica Nazionale Combattenti» under Maestro Giosuè Iamiceli, later passing to Maestros Antonio Lardieri and Armando Gagliardi in the post-war era. Refounded in 1997 with about twenty musicians, the association formally became a non-profit organization in April 2003; by the summer of 2007, it was already organizing the 3rd edition of «Quando impazza la banda in piazza», proving the event began just a few years earlier, in the mid-2000s.
Today, the association brings together several ensembles, each with its own repertoire:
Sassinfunky was born in 2002 as Sassindixieland, a septet dedicated exclusively to 1920s dixieland and jazz. In October 2013, it adopted its current form as a choreographic marching band, with eighteen members playing brass and percussion, shifting its repertoire toward funk and blues while still embracing swing, ska, and Balkan sounds. In its first year, the group won the Heineken Musical Contest and participated in auditions for Italia's Got Talent; over time, it has brought its parade to major stages like Umbria Jazz and the Ferrara Buskers Festival.
The festival formula also includes guest performers from outside the region. In 2024, for the 20th edition, the Sassinfunky band was joined by the Girlesque StreetBand, the first and only all-female Italian street band: founded in Tuscany in 2012 by Luisa Marruganti and Marco Vivian, it brings together nine musicians who play, dance, and perform with an explicit nod to the burlesque aesthetic.
As in any self-respecting village festival, the food is no minor detail. Stalls set up in the square accompany the evening throughout its duration: the 2024 edition offered a full menu with wine or water for 10 euros, along with draft beer served for the occasion. It is the perfect formula for spending the entire evening on-site, from the aperitif to the final concert, without ever leaving the historic center.
Sassinoro is located in the upper Tammaro valley, at the northern tip of the Benevento province, just a few kilometers from Morcone and the border with Molise. It is a village that has built part of its identity around the springs and waterways that cross it, even dedicating a specific event to the topic, «Sassinoro paese dell'acqua», featuring conferences, workshops, and educational activities between late August and early September.
The street band evening is therefore a piece of the broader «Estate a Sassinoro» calendar, promoted by the Municipality together with the Pro Loco: over the years, the same month has hosted events like Etno gusto, dedicated to world cuisines, Suoni e sapori on August 12th, blending music and gastronomy in the historic center, and the Wild Boar Festival. The patron saint, Saint Michael the Archangel, is celebrated in the spring, in May.
Those looking for a massive festival with international headliners won't find it in Sassinoro. However, those who want to understand how the inland Campania region experiences live music—in the square, for free, with a local band that is also capable of playing at Umbria Jazz—will find one of the most successful examples in the Campania Region: a century-old band tradition that has reinvented itself with a funk twist without losing its bond with the community that created it.
As of the writing of this guide, the 2026 summer calendar for Sassinoro has not yet been released, and no official date for the new edition has been published. Given the historical regularity of the event, it is reasonable to expect the evening to take place in August: we recommend checking the social media channels of the Pro Loco Sassinoro and the Associazione Musicale Città di Sassinoro before setting off.
The summer 2026 calendar for the Municipality of Sassinoro, in the province of Benevento, has not yet been released, and no source reports an official date for the new edition of «Quando impazza la banda in piazza». It is therefore not possible to indicate times or guest groups at this moment.
What can be said is that the event is a consolidated appointment in the month of August, hosted in Piazza IV Novembre and organized by the Associazione Musicale Città di Sassinoro as part of the «Estate a Sassinoro» festival. The proven formula includes a parade of street bands playing funk, jazz, blues, swing, and Balkan rhythms, with free admission and food stalls in the square.
We will update this page as soon as the date and program are made public.
Sassinoro can be reached by car: the village is located at the extreme north of the Benevento province, a few kilometers from Morcone and the border with Molise. Those arriving by train can use the Benevento–Campobasso line, completing the last stretch by car or taxi.
Everything revolves around Piazza IV Novembre and the alleys of the historic center, which the street bands parade through. The square is closed to traffic: it is best to leave your car along the roads leading into the village and continue on foot.
Admission to the evening is traditionally free of charge. Only the food and drink are paid: in 2024, the full menu with a drink cost 10 euros. It is wise to carry cash, as electronic payment is not always available at the village stalls.
