VinArt Est: independent comics arrive in Pigneto

VinArt Est is a Roman festival dedicated to independent comics and self-publishing, bringing stalls of independent authors, illustrators, and small publishing houses to the heart of the Pigneto district in Rome's 5th Municipality. Conceived and curated by SO2 Distribuzione ed Enoteca, the event unites two worlds that have always coexisted in Pigneto: the visual arts of the local underground scene and the culture of natural wine.

A self-publishing market between the square and gardens

The heart of the event is the Giardini Persiani-Nuccitelli, overlooking Piazza Nuccitelli, where for an entire day (and often a full weekend) a self-publishing market is set up: cartoonists, illustrators, and fanzine creators exhibit limited-edition albums, prints, woodcuts, risographs, zines, and graphic novels created and distributed in total independence. It is the most authentic face of grassroots comic publishing, born outside major circuits and finding a natural habitat in Pigneto.

Talks, exhibitions, and DJ sets

In addition to the stalls, VinArt Est offers talks and meetings on independent publishing, where authors discuss their work, printing techniques, and the challenges (and freedoms) of self-publishing. There are also exhibitions dedicated to the festival's protagonists, DJ sets accompanying the afternoon and evening, and natural wine tastings curated by SO2, featuring selected producers and direct tastings at the stalls. Among the entities that have animated the various stages of the festival is the Roman illustration studio Pausania Studio.

Pigneto: a district of wine and creativity

VinArt Est lives in symbiosis with Quartiere Vino Pigneto, the widespread natural wine event that transforms the neighborhood streets every spring into a tasting itinerary, and with the monthly VinArt fEST that SO2 hosts in its wine shop on Via Ettore Giovenale. Pigneto, a historic working-class district east of Rome's center made famous by Pasolini's cinema, is today one of the most vibrant hubs of the city's independent culture: here, author comics, music, and artisanal wine meet in an informal and participatory atmosphere, far from commercial logic.
