About On the Road to Bethlehem

In Varena, a village in the municipality of Ville di Fiemme in Val di Fiemme, the "On the Road to Bethlehem" artistic nativity scene transforms the heart of the town every year into a 700-meter trail where ancient Bethlehem comes to life. Created in 1989 by local volunteers, it features over 100 figures and around a hundred animals across twenty-four stations dedicated to traditional crafts. Entirely handmade, it is free to visit throughout the Christmas season, both by day and by night, when hundreds of lights create a fairy-tale atmosphere.

A nativity scene that tells the story of ancient Bethlehem

In the small village of Varena, part of the municipality of Ville di Fiemme in the province of Trento, the "On the Road to Bethlehem" artistic nativity scene has become one of the most beloved Christmas traditions in Val di Fiemme. Every winter, winding through alleys and courtyards, a 700-meter trail takes shape, guiding visitors on a journey back to ancient Bethlehem, meticulously reconstructed in every detail.

History and origins

The initiative began in 1989 from an idea by local volunteers who wanted to create something unique and magical for the Advent season. Since then, the nativity scene has grown year after year, becoming an event that attracts visitors from all over Trentino-Alto Adige and beyond. Every element—figures, animals, small houses, and decorations—is entirely handmade by volunteers using traditional techniques such as papier-mâché, wood carving, and fabric recycling.

The trail and the crafts

Along the route, you will encounter over 100 figures and about a hundred animals, distributed across twenty-four stations that depict the life and trades of the past. Visitors can discover:

  • the potter and the sculptor working with clay;
  • the carpenter, the blacksmith, and the cobbler in their workshops;
  • the cheesemaker, wool spinning, dyeing, and tanning;
  • the mill, the inn, the bazaar, and the fisherman;
  • scenes of shepherding, musicians, and, at the heart of it all, the Nativity.

At nightfall, hundreds of lights illuminate the path, giving the display an enchanted, suspended atmosphere that is particularly appreciated by families with children.

A Christmas highlight in Val di Fiemme

Included in the calendar of nativity scenes and Christmas markets in Trentino, the Varena display is an authentic example of a community nativity scene, the result of the patient, voluntary work of the local inhabitants. Admission is free and it is open for the entire Christmas period, both day and night, making it an ideal destination to combine with a day in the snow or a walk through the villages of the valley.
