The grand artistic nativity scene of Varena in Val di Fiemme
In the small village of Varena, part of the municipality of Ville di Fiemme in the province of Trento, the "On the Road to Bethlehem" artistic nativity scene has become one of the most beloved Christmas traditions in Val di Fiemme. Every winter, winding through alleys and courtyards, a 700-meter trail takes shape, guiding visitors on a journey back to ancient Bethlehem, meticulously reconstructed in every detail.
The initiative began in 1989 from an idea by local volunteers who wanted to create something unique and magical for the Advent season. Since then, the nativity scene has grown year after year, becoming an event that attracts visitors from all over Trentino-Alto Adige and beyond. Every element—figures, animals, small houses, and decorations—is entirely handmade by volunteers using traditional techniques such as papier-mâché, wood carving, and fabric recycling.
Along the route, you will encounter over 100 figures and about a hundred animals, distributed across twenty-four stations that depict the life and trades of the past. Visitors can discover:
At nightfall, hundreds of lights illuminate the path, giving the display an enchanted, suspended atmosphere that is particularly appreciated by families with children.
Included in the calendar of nativity scenes and Christmas markets in Trentino, the Varena display is an authentic example of a community nativity scene, the result of the patient, voluntary work of the local inhabitants. Admission is free and it is open for the entire Christmas period, both day and night, making it an ideal destination to combine with a day in the snow or a walk through the villages of the valley.
The grand artistic nativity scene of Varena, a village in the municipality of Ville di Fiemme in Val di Fiemme, returned for the 2025-2026 season with an inauguration on Sunday, November 30, 2025, at 5:00 PM, featuring the traditional distribution of mulled wine and tea for all attendees. The display remained open until January 18, 2026.
Along the 700-meter trail, over 100 silent and hardworking figures brought the scenes of ancient Bethlehem to life: clay working, shepherding, the blacksmith, the carpenter, the baker, and the dairy, all the way to the Nativity stable. At nightfall, hundreds of lights made the atmosphere particularly evocative. Admission was free.
The nativity scene is set up in the village of Varena, municipality of Ville di Fiemme (TN), in Val di Fiemme. It can be reached by car along the SS48 Dolomite road; the nearest motorway exit is Egna/Ora (A22 Brennero motorway), from where you continue towards Cavalese and Varena.
Admission is free. The trail can be visited by day and by night throughout the Christmas period. For specific opening hours and information, it is recommended to check the official website or the nativity scene's Facebook page.
