The theatre that invades the ducal city
Every July, Urbino Teatro Urbano (UTU) transforms the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage city into a large, widespread stage. For a week, the squares, courtyards, historic buildings, and alleys of Urbino's center, in the heart of Montefeltro, host drama shows, itinerant performances, concerts, and street arts. It is one of the most vibrant theatre festivals in the Marche region, capable of uniting big names from the national scene with emerging young companies.
A project by the University of Urbino
The festival is conceived and organized by the Cesare Questa University Theatre Centre (CTU) of the University of Urbino Carlo Bo, in collaboration with the City of Urbino, AMAT, ERDIS, the Accademia Raffaello, and the Ministry of Culture. This university matrix is its distinctive feature: alongside evening shows open to the public, UTU is also a permanent laboratory for theatre research and training, where students, artists, and citizens meet.
The locations: the city is the stage
The heart of the evening shows is Piazza Duca Federico, at the foot of the Ducal Palace, but the festival knows how to multiply its spaces: the Albornoz Fortress with its view of the city, the courtyard of the San Girolamo Library, the charming Piazzetta del Carmine, the Botanical Garden, the university colleges designed by Giancarlo De Carlo, and historic palaces like Palazzo Gherardi and Palazzo Odasi. The itinerant performances, on the other hand, animate Via Mazzini and the entire historic center, literally bringing theatre to the residents' doorsteps.
FITT - Make Your Theatre!
The soul of the festival is FITT - Make Your Theatre!, an advanced training course dedicated to groups, associations, companies, and artistic collectives from all over Italy. The training paths combine frontal lectures with workshop sessions, guiding participants in defining their own strategy for cultural growth and territorial planning.
From the historic center to the villages of Montefeltro
UTU does not end in Urbino: in the itinerant section "Piazze. Theatre at your doorstep!" the festival continues until September, bringing popular theatre shows to the squares of numerous municipalities in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, a concrete way to spread theatrical culture in the small towns of the Marche territory.

2026 Edition
Urbino Teatro Urbano returns in 2026 from July 2 to 8, with the new edition of FITT - Make Your Theatre! (seventh edition of the course). The formula that made the festival famous is confirmed: evening shows in the squares of Urbino's historic center, itinerant performances through the alleys, artistic residencies, and advanced training courses for companies and collectives.
For 2026, the training courses are divided into four areas - Organization, Communication, Technical and Production, and the new European Planning track - aimed at groups, associations, companies, and artistic collectives interested in territorial cultural projects.
The detailed program of evening shows will be announced by the Cesare Questa University Theatre Centre in the weeks preceding the festival.

The usual structure includes:
- Evening shows (around 9:15 PM) in Piazza Duca Federico and other symbolic locations of the city (Albornoz Fortress, Piazzetta del Carmine, courtyards, and historic palaces).
- Itinerant performances through the streets of the historic center.
- Evening concert and musical moments.
- FITT - Make Your Theatre!, advanced training course with four tracks (Organization, Communication, Technical and Production, European Planning).
- Artistic residencies and meetings.
The itinerant phase "Piazze. Theatre at your doorstep!" then brings shows to the squares of the municipalities in the province of Pesaro and Urbino until September.

How to get there
Urbino does not have a train station: the nearest station is Pesaro, on the Bologna-Lecce Adriatic line, connected to Urbino by bus (about 50 minutes). By car, it can be reached from the SS73bis highway (Urbino exit) or from the A14 motorway, Pesaro-Urbino exit.
Tickets
Evening shows are ticketed at popular prices; some events (itinerant performances, meetings) are free. Information and advance ticket sales through the Cesare Questa University Theatre Centre.
Where to stay
The historic center of Urbino offers numerous B&Bs and hotels; booking in advance is recommended in summer due to the tourist influx in the ducal city.
