The festival that transforms Urbino's squares into an open-air theatre
Every July, Urbino Teatro Urbano (UTU) transforms the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage city into a large, widespread stage. For a week, the squares, courtyards, historic buildings, and alleys of Urbino's centre, in the heart of Montefeltro, host drama shows, itinerant performances, concerts, and street arts. It is one of the most vibrant theatre festivals in the Marche region, capable of uniting big names from the national scene with emerging young companies.
The festival is conceived and organised by the Cesare Questa University Theatre Centre (CTU) of the University of Urbino Carlo Bo, in collaboration with the City of Urbino, AMAT, ERDIS, the Accademia Raffaello, and the Ministry of Culture. This university background is its distinctive feature: alongside the evening shows open to the public, UTU is also a permanent laboratory for theatre research and training, where students, artists, and citizens meet.
The heart of the evening shows is Piazza Duca Federico, at the foot of the Ducal Palace, but the festival knows how to multiply its spaces: the Fortezza Albornoz with its view over the city, the courtyard of the San Girolamo Library, the charming Piazzetta del Carmine, the Botanical Garden, the university colleges designed by Giancarlo De Carlo, and historic palaces such as Palazzo Gherardi and Palazzo Odasi. The itinerant performances animate Via Mazzini and the entire historic centre, bringing theatre literally to the residents' doorsteps.
The soul of the festival is FITT - Fai il tuo teatro! (Make your theatre!), an advanced training course dedicated to groups, associations, companies, and artistic collectives from all over Italy. The training courses combine frontal lectures with workshop sessions, guiding participants in defining their own strategy for cultural growth and territorial planning.
UTU does not end in Urbino: in the itinerant section "Piazze. Il teatro sotto casa tua!" (Squares. Theatre at your doorstep!), the festival continues until September, bringing popular theatre performances to the squares of numerous municipalities in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, a concrete way to spread theatrical culture in the small towns of the Marche region.
Urbino Teatro Urbano returns in 2026 from July 2nd to 8th, with the new edition of FITT - Fai il tuo teatro! (seventh edition of the course). The formula that made the festival famous is confirmed: evening shows in the squares of Urbino's historic centre, itinerant performances through the alleys, artistic residencies, and advanced training courses for companies and collectives.
For 2026, the training courses are divided into four areas - Organisation, Communication, Technical and Set-up, and the new European Planning course - aimed at groups, associations, companies, and artistic collectives interested in territorial cultural projects.
The detailed programme of evening shows will be announced by the Cesare Questa University Theatre Centre in the weeks preceding the festival.
The detailed programme of shows and artists for the 2026 edition will be published by the Cesare Questa University Theatre Centre in the weeks leading up to the festival.
The usual structure includes:
The itinerant phase "Piazze. Il teatro sotto casa tua!" (Squares. Theatre at your doorstep!) then brings shows to the squares of municipalities in the province of Pesaro and Urbino until September.
The dates for the 2026 edition are confirmed (July 2-8): a week of theatre in the squares of the UNESCO ducal city, with the FITT course now in its seventh edition and the new area dedicated to European planning.
Urbino does not have a train station: the nearest station is Pesaro, on the Bologna-Lecce Adriatic line, connected to Urbino by bus (about 50 minutes). By car, you can reach it from the SS73bis dual carriageway (Urbino exit) or from the A14 motorway, Pesaro-Urbino exit.
Evening shows are ticketed at popular prices; some events (itinerant performances, talks) are free. Information and advance booking through the Cesare Questa University Theatre Centre.
The historic centre of Urbino offers numerous B&Bs and hotels; advance booking is recommended in summer due to the tourist influx in the ducal city.
