Edition 2025 — U Pagghiaru

On January 6, 2025, the village of Bordonaro in Messina celebrated U Pagghiaru, confirming the vitality of an Epiphany ritual dating back to the 11th century. The large conical structure decorated with breads and citrus fruits was the scene of the assault, accompanied by blessings, bands, bagpipers, and fireworks, before a large community.

The 2025 edition of U Pagghiaru was held on January 6th, the day of the Epiphany, in the village of Bordonaro, Messina. As per tradition, the large structure of chestnut wood and acacia branches, adorned with ring-shaped breads, oranges, and lemons, was set up in the village square. After the blessing rites conducted by the Santa Maria delle Grazie Parish, climbers launched their assault to reach the top. The day, marked by folk music, bagpipers, and pantomimes, concluded with traditional fireworks, confirming U Pagghiaru as one of the most cherished identity rituals in Sicily.
