The sacred representation of the Nativity in the village of Trappeto, featuring songs and music from ancient Sicilian tradition
The Trappeto Living Nativity is one of the most deeply rooted Christmas traditions in the hamlet of Trappeto, in the municipality of San Giovanni la Punta, in the province of Catania. Every year, between December and January, the small village on the slopes of Mount Etna transforms into an evocative Nativity village, where the entire community comes together to bring to life a sacred performance awaited for generations.
The performance takes place on a large plot of land donated to the community, just a few steps from the Church of Maria SS. del Rosario e San Rocco, on Via Gabriele D'Annunzio. The space is set up to reconstruct an authentic Sicilian village of the past: Mediterranean plants like olive trees, animal pens, and traditional farming tools guide the visitor along a path that leads to the central Nativity scene.
At the heart of the event are live songs from the ancient Sicilian tradition: melodies and lyrics passed down over time, some of which were composed by the parishioners themselves in the early years of the event. The performance thus takes the form of a true folk musical, where music, words, and spiritual reflection intertwine to convey all the emotion of the Gospel story.
The nativity scene is coordinated by the San Rocco Community and the hamlet's parish groups, with the patronage of the Municipality of San Giovanni la Punta. It is a deeply participatory event that involves families, children, and volunteers in preparing the scenes and animating the village. One of the sessions is traditionally dedicated to the children of the oratory, confirming the educational and communal value of the event.
Part of the rich calendar of living nativity scenes in Eastern Sicily, the Trappeto Living Nativity attracts visitors every year from neighboring towns and the Catania metropolitan area. Admission is free, and the event is an opportunity to rediscover the spirituality of Christmas, folk culture, and the identity of the Etna province.
The start-of-year appointment with the Trappeto Living Nativity was held on Saturday, January 3, and Sunday, January 4, 2026, in the hamlet of Trappeto, in San Giovanni la Punta.
