The autonomous march for the liberation of trans and queer people in Rome
The Trans Queer Liberation March is a political demonstration held in Rome, in the Lazio Region, between late May and the beginning of summer. It is neither an institutional event nor a polished parade: it is a grassroots march, promoted by the Trans Queer Liberation Coordination, which fills the streets of the capital every year to claim visibility and rights for trans and queer people. The meeting point is Piazzale Aldo Moro, in front of the monumental entrance of Sapienza University, just a stone's throw from the San Lorenzo district.
The organizers strongly emphasize a precise choice: not using the word Pride. Renouncing that term serves to highlight the political meaning at the root of the demonstration, which is distinct from both the Rome Pride and other LGBTQ+ community events in the city. The goal is to build a different, independent, and specific space where trans and queer people are not the object of others' discourse, but political subjects capable of deciding their own lives, bodies, and demands. For the same reason, the organizers avoid listing the entities involved: no umbrella organizations, only trans and queer people as the sole protagonists of the march.
At the center of the square are the trans people most exposed to violence and marginalization. The Coordination reminds us that Italy remains one of the European countries with the highest number of murdered trans people, with a clear female majority. For this reason, the march explicitly gives voice to trans women, sex workers, asylum seekers, and racialized individuals, who are identified as the strength and pride of the movement.
The gathering is set for the late afternoon at Piazzale Aldo Moro, chosen for a reason: it is a symbolic space linked to the university and youth mobilization. From here, the march moves through the streets of the city's center-east, amidst banners, megaphone speeches, music, and moments of collective celebration. It is a participatory, itinerant event with a strong youth presence that combines the dimension of protest with that of social connection.
The Trans Queer Liberation March is a young but rapidly growing event: the first editions were held starting in 2024, and participation has increased year after year, becoming a national reference point for the Italian trans and queer movement. Each edition renews the bond with the city of Rome and its long tradition of political activism in public squares.
For those living in Rome or passing through Lazio in late spring, the march offers a direct look at a living piece of contemporary Italian society. It is a free and open event where the dimension of protest intertwines with that of community: signs, colors, chants, and a simple, radical idea of freedom for all trans and queer people.
The fourth edition of the Trans Queer Liberation March took place in Rome on Sunday, May 31, 2026, with a meeting at 5:30 PM at Piazzale Aldo Moro. The Trans Queer Liberation Coordination reaffirmed the autonomous and political nature of the march, distinct from Pride, placing trans women and those most exposed to violence and discrimination—sex workers, asylum seekers, and racialized individuals—at the center. A participatory march that, amidst banners and speeches, crossed the city with the watchword: we exist, we resist, and we want our liberation.
Meeting point and departure of the march at Piazzale Aldo Moro, in front of the Sapienza University City (Rome, ZIP 00185), in Municipality II near the San Lorenzo district.
The area is served by the Roma Termini station (about a 15-minute walk away) and numerous bus and tram lines. Public transport is recommended, given the closure of several streets to traffic during the march.
The event is free and open to anyone who wishes to participate or show solidarity.
