About Torchiani Festival

In Castel Ruggero, a hamlet of Torre Orsaia in the heart of the Cilento region, a summer evening is entirely dedicated to 'torchiani'โ€”traditional, freshly fried fritters. They are served in the two versions that make this festival special: sweet, with honey or hazelnut spread, and savoury, with salt cod, anchovies, or zucchini flowers. Surrounded by tasting stalls, folk music and the intimate atmosphere of a village square complete this small but deeply felt festival, promoted by the Pro Loco Torre Orsaia.

A village festival built around a single product

In the summer calendar of Torre Orsaia, a municipality in the Province of Salerno in the heart of Cilento, there is one evening that belongs entirely to the hamlet of Castel Ruggero and a single specialty: torchiani. This is not an event designed for mass crowds, but one of those festivals that brings back to the square a flavour that local families have known for generations and that, outside the village, almost no one has ever heard of.

The organisation is handled by the Pro Loco Torre Orsaia, the association of volunteers that brings the summer of the municipality and its hamlet to life with a calendar of gastronomic evenings, music, and community events.

What are torchiani?

Torchiani are leavened dough fritters, hand-shaped and fried on the spot: a humble preparation, born from the Cilento peasant kitchen, where flour, water, and yeast were enough to turn a few ingredients into something festive. In Torre Orsaia, they have remained a true gastronomic signature, the dish the village brings to the table when it is time to celebrate.

The curiosity that makes this evening different from the many other food festivals in the area is the dual nature of the product: the same dough becomes a dessert or an appetiser depending on what accompanies it. It is a simple detail, but it perfectly captures the logic of mountain and hill cuisine, where nothing is wasted and every preparation can change its role within the same meal.

Sweet and savoury: the tasting varieties

The combinations documented in past editions of the festival include:

  • With honey โ€” the oldest and simplest version, the one that traditionally closes the evening.
  • With hazelnut spread โ€” the indulgent variant, inevitably the favourite among children.
  • With salt cod (baccalร ) โ€” the traditional savoury choice, in a territory where preserved fish always arrived before fresh fish.
  • With anchovies โ€” a nod to the sea of the Gulf of Policastro, just a few kilometres away.
  • With zucchini flowers โ€” the garden version, available only in the height of summer.

Folk music and square atmosphere

The tasting is never just a gastronomic affair: the evening is accompanied by live music, featuring folk and traditional bands. In documented editions, entertainment was provided by the Happy Folk Band, which enlivened the square until late in the evening. It is the kind of festival where tables are pushed together, neighbours sit side-by-side, and the music serves as a backdrop for conversation rather than a front-stage performance.

Castel Ruggero, the village hosting the evening

Castel Ruggero is a hillside hamlet of Torre Orsaia, a settlement gathered around its main square, which in summer becomes the natural centre of village life. Here, the Pro Loco concentrates much of its summer programming, from gastronomic evenings to guided tours of the Emigrant Museum, which preserves the memory of the departures that deeply marked this part of the Cilento hinterland.

Where it is: the Cilento hinterland

Torre Orsaia is located in the hinterland of lower Cilento, in Campania, a short distance from the coast of the Gulf of Policastro and close to the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. It is an area of small villages, river valleys, and roads that climb rapidly from the sea to the hills: those arriving for the festival are just minutes away from some of the most pristine landscapes in the province of Salerno.

This location also explains the cuisine found in the square: garden produce, preserves, local flours, and the small amount of fish that, in salted or preserved form, has always made its way from the sea to the interior.

When it takes place

The Torchiani Festival traditionally takes place at the end of July, as part of the summer event programme of Torre Orsaia and its hamlets. The exact dates are communicated year by year by the Pro Loco Torre Orsaia through its social media channels and the municipality's summer calendar, usually a few weeks in advance.

Why it is worth visiting

This is a festival that does not promise big stages or record-breaking numbers: it promises a specialty that is found practically only here, prepared by those who have always made it, and an authentic village evening. For those spending their holidays on the Cilento coast, it is the perfect opportunity to head inland and see how summer is lived far from the crowded beaches.

Torchiani Festival โ€” edition 2026

For the summer of 2026, the Torchiani Festival does not yet have an official published date: the summer events calendar for Torre Orsaia and its hamlets is released by the Pro Loco with just a few weeks' notice. The event traditionally takes place at the end of July in the hamlet of Castel Ruggero, featuring tastings of sweet and savoury torchiani and live folk music. Information will be updated as soon as it becomes available.

The Torchiani Festival of 2026 has not yet been officially announced. At the moment, neither the date nor the programme for the evening in Castel Ruggero, a hamlet of Torre Orsaia, in the province of Salerno, has been published.

The usual timing for the event is the end of July, as part of the summer programme curated by the Pro Loco Torre Orsaia. The established formula includes the tasting of torchiani, leavened dough fritters fried on the spot, served in both sweet (honey, hazelnut spread) and savoury (salt cod, anchovies, zucchini flowers) versions, with live folk music enlivening the square.

Those wishing to attend can follow the social media channels of the Pro Loco Torre Orsaia and the municipal events calendar, where summer dates are generally communicated between the end of June and the first half of July.

Practical information — Torchiani Festival

How to get there

Castel Ruggero is a hamlet of Torre Orsaia, in lower Cilento. By car, exit the Autostrada del Mediterraneo (A2) and continue along the Bussento valley road towards Policastro; from the coast, the village can be reached in about twenty minutes of driving through the hills. The reference train station is Sapri, on the Tyrrhenian line, about twenty kilometres away: from there, it is advisable to continue by car or taxi, as the evening bus service to the hamlets is very limited.

Parking

On festival evenings, the centre of the hamlet is closed to traffic: it is best to leave the car along the access road to the village and walk the last few metres.

Costs and tastings

As in most Cilento village festivals, entry to the square is free, and you only pay for what you consume at the tasting stalls. Prices are not published in advance: it is useful to bring cash, as electronic payments are not always available.

Useful tips

  • Arrive early: the torchiani are fried on the spot, and during the peak hours of the evening, the wait can get longer.
  • The evening is outdoors and in the hills: after midnight the temperature drops, so it is better to have something warmer to wear.
  • For updated dates, it is best to follow the social media pages of the Pro Loco Torre Orsaia.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Torre Orsaia is limited to a few facilities; those staying overnight usually base themselves in Sapri, Policastro Bussentino, Vibonati, or at the agritourisms scattered throughout the Bussento valley.
