The queen of winter races between Civita Castellana, Nepi, and Castel Sant'Elia
The Three Municipalities Half Marathon is one of the most beloved and long-standing road races in Lazio. Every year, on the last Sunday of January, it draws thousands of runners to the Agro Falisco, the area of the Viterbo Tuscia surrounding Civita Castellana, in the province of Viterbo. With its classic distance of 22.4 km and a route connecting three towns, it has earned the nickname the queen of winter races: an event that effectively kicks off the regional running season and, despite the January chill, never fails to thrill.
The feature that makes this half marathon unique is its inter-municipal track, which links Civita Castellana, Nepi, and Castel Sant'Elia. The start and finish line rotates between the three towns each year, allowing each community to take turns hosting the event. The route crosses the Faliscan countryside, skirts ancient aqueducts, the Ponte di Braccio bridge over the Treia creek, and the tuff gorges typical of this corner of Lazio, before climbing back toward the historic centers. In the final stretch, competitors parade through the heart of Civita Castellana, the city of the Cosmati, passing through the main square and the Cathedral before crossing the finish line.
Started in 1980, the Three Municipalities Half Marathon reached the milestone of its 46th edition in 2026. It is organized by A.S.D. Atletica Nepi, a historic local association that has made this race its signature event. Over the decades, the race has grown to regularly exceed two thousand participants, becoming a benchmark for runners throughout central Italy and for sports clubs in Lazio.
Much more than a simple competition, the Three Municipalities Half Marathon is a collective celebration involving the entire Agro Falisco. Along the route, the towns come alive with the cheers of residents, refreshment stations, and the participation of local administrations. The race showcases the historical and landscape heritage of Tusciaโfrom ancient water systems to medieval fortresses, from tuff gorges to villagesโoffering participants a different, athletic way to discover this territory.
The forty-sixth edition of the Three Municipalities Half Marathon was held on Sunday, January 25, 2026, confirming the charm of the queen of winter races in Lazio. Meeting at 07:00 and start at 09:00 from Via Roma, in Civita Castellana, the host city for the start and finish of this edition.
The 22.4 km course was designed in the opposite direction to previous years: from the city of the Cosmati towards Nepi, crossing the aqueduct, then Castel Sant'Elia along the Millecori descent and the Ponte di Braccio bridge over the Treia, with the subsequent climb to the hospital and the return to the historic center of Civita Castellana, between the main square and the Cathedral.
Civita Castellana is located in northern Lazio, in the province of Viterbo. By car, it can be reached via the A1 motorway (Magliano Sabina exit) or the Via Flaminia (SS3); from Rome, it takes about an hour via the SS3. By train, the reference station is Civita Castellana-Magliano Sabina on the Rome-Viterbo line, or the State Railway stations along the Rome-Florence line with bus connections.
The meeting point is set for 07:00, with the start at 09:00 from Via Roma, in Civita Castellana. Ample parking is available near the starting area.
Registration is handled through A.S.D. Atletica Nepi (www.atleticanepi.com) and official running registration channels. For information: +39 328 4884306 / +39 339 4537845.
