The sacred re-enactment in the hamlet of Sant'Angelo di Avigliano
In Sant'Angelo, a hamlet of Avigliano in the province of Potenza, Holy Week becomes popular theatre and prayer. The Passion of Christ is an open-air sacred representation that, during Easter time, involves the entire small community in a choral re-enactment of Jesus's final days.
The route begins at Piazza XVI dicembre and winds through the village streets, touching upon the central moments of the Gospel narrative: the Last Supper and Judas's betrayal, the arrest in the Garden of Olives, the trial, the ascent to Golgotha with the crucifixion, and the deposition in the tomb. Along the path of sorrow, characters from tradition appear: Mary, Simon of Cyrene, Veronica, and the devout women.
The re-enactment is brought to life by local participants, organized by the Parrocchia Maria SS. del Carmelo (Parish of Maria SS. of Mount Carmel): they create the costumes and sets, transforming alleys and squares into settings for the sacred narrative. The result is an intense performance where devotion and popular participation intertwine.
Newly established, The Passion of Christ of Sant'Angelo has quickly become an anticipated event of the Easter celebrations in Avigliano. For visitors, it is an opportunity to experience an authentic tradition of inland Basilicata, in a secluded village immersed in the landscapes of the Potentino area.
For 2026, The Passion of Christ returns to Sant'Angelo di Avigliano during Easter time, starting from Piazza XVI dicembre and with the usual community involvement in the re-enactment of Jesus's last hours.
The performance takes place along the village streets, starting from Piazza XVI dicembre, and retraces the scenes of the Passion: Last Supper and Judas's betrayal, arrest in the Garden of Olives, trial, ascent to Golgotha, crucifixion, and deposition.
The exact date and start time for the 2026 edition will be announced by the Parrocchia Maria SS. del Carmelo in the weeks preceding Easter.
