The Other Contemporary – Presente Cinese

A journey into contemporary Chinese art in Ascoli Piceno

The Other Contemporary – Presente Cinese is the international exhibition that brings one of the most vital and disruptive art scenes of our time to Ascoli Piceno, in the Marche region: contemporary Chinese art. Hosted in the halls of the Osvaldo Licini Gallery of Contemporary Art, at Corso Giuseppe Mazzini 90, the exhibition is promoted by Feu!Lab in collaboration with the Municipality of Ascoli Piceno and is part of a travelling project that has already visited Ancona, Macerata, and Gradara.

The artists

The exhibition brings together some of the most internationally recognized names in contemporary Chinese art. Among the artists featured are Hong Mei, Xu De Qi, Chen Wenling, Luo Zhi Yi, Ma Yuan, Qian Wu, Song Yongping, Xiao Lu, and Xing Junqin. Their works dialogue with each other and with the public, offering a key to understanding the complexity of today's China.

Painting, sculpture, installations

The exhibition path explores different languages and techniques: paintings, sculptures, multimedia installations, and conceptual research. The Chinese pop art component is strong, capable of surprising visitors with its expressive power. The works depict a China suspended between memory and modernity, between spirituality, urbanisation, and new social identities, portraying a country in continuous transformation.

A bridge between East and West

Curated by Maurizio Fava (Feu!Lab) with Mauro Luminari (Creative Project), the exhibition was conceived with the aim of building a cultural dialogue between East and West. Art here becomes a tool for interpreting the complexity of the Chinese present and for reflecting on China's role in the global art scene. In Ascoli Piceno, an art city in the southern Marche region, the exhibition finds an ideal setting amidst the historic travertine squares and the vibrant cultural scene of the city.
