Classical theatre amidst the ruins of the ancient Greco-Roman city of Tusa
The Teatri di Pietra at Halaesa Arconidea festival brings a grand classical repertoire to the ruins of the ancient Greco-Roman city located on the hills of Tusa, in the heart of the Nebrodi mountains, in the province of Messina (Sicily). This initiative is part of the national Teatri di Pietra project, a network that for over twenty years has been restoring the original purpose of Mediterranean archaeological and monumental sites as venues for performance, blending heritage conservation with contemporary theatrical production.
The Halaesa Arconidea Archaeological Park preserves the remains of a city founded in the 4th century BC, featuring the agora, public buildings, paved streets, and, more recently, the Hellenistic-Roman theatre brought to light by excavations. Recent archaeological campaigns, which have also revealed an impressive thermal complex, have made the site even more precious and reinforced its vocation as a natural stage: performances take place among the ruins, with the valley and the Tyrrhenian Sea as a backdrop.
The programme focuses on the Greek and Latin repertoire: the great tragedies of Euripides and Aeschylus, the comedies of Aristophanes, as well as music-theatre performances, dramatizations of myths, and itinerant productions. The events, typically starting at 9:00 PM, feature professional companies and directors from the Teatri di Pietra circuit, with stagings specifically designed to engage with the ancient space.
The performances at Halaesa are part of the rich summer season of the Municipality of Tusa, which also includes the Archaeology Week, the Book Festival, the Sicilian Song Festival, and various cabaret and prose events. It is an opportunity to discover a village in the Nebrodi that combines archaeology, forests, authentic flavours, and contemporary art, just a few kilometres from the famous Fiumara d'Arte land art project.
For the summer of 2026, the Halaesa Arconidea archaeological site in Tusa (province of Messina, Sicily) hosts a programme of classical theatre among the ruins. The main performances are "The Trojan Women" on August 5, "Medea" on August 9, and Aristophanes' "The Frogs" on August 18, three great titles from the Greek repertoire. Completing the programme is the itinerant show "Terraemotus", blending myth and theatre, scheduled for August 21.
The performances, produced as part of the Tindari Archaeological Park season and the Sicilian ancient theatre circuit, take place in the evening among the Hellenistic-Roman remains of the site. The performances at Halaesa are part of the broad cultural offering of Tusa's 2026 summer, which also includes the Archaeology Week (July 13-19) and the Book Festival (August 18-22).
The archaeological site of Halaesa Arconidea is located in the Sant'Agata district, along the road that climbs from Tusa Marina (A20 Palermo-Messina motorway, Tusa-Castel di Lucio exit) towards the village of Tusa, in the province of Messina. It is easily reached by car; the reference railway station is Tusa, on the Tyrrhenian line.
Performances generally start at 9:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased online (via the Liveticket platform) and, when available, at the site box office on the evenings of the performances. It is advisable to check dates and availability on the official Teatri di Pietra channels before travelling.
Bring a light jacket for the evening and comfortable footwear for walking along the paths of the archaeological park. We recommend combining this with a daytime visit to the site and the village of Tusa.
