Great drama and music in the historic Italian-style theatre of Matelica
The Stagione Teatrale del Teatro Piermarini is the cultural event that, from November to April, enlivens the historic centre of Matelica, in the province of Macerata, in the hinterland of the Marche region. Promoted by the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Matelica in collaboration with AMAT (Associazione Marchigiana Attività Teatrali), with the support of the Marche Region and the Ministry of Culture, the festival offers a rich and varied programme: great authorial drama, comedy, concerts, amateur theatre, and shows designed for children and families.
The festival takes place in one of the most fascinating historic theatres in the region. The Giuseppe Piermarini Municipal Theatre was designed around 1805 by the famous architect Giuseppe Piermarini, the same architect who designed Milan's La Scala, and was inaugurated in 1812. After important 19th-century restorations and a long recovery project, the theatre was reopened to the public in 1995: the season celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of that reopening with special non-subscription events. Its Italian-style hall, with boxes arranged on multiple tiers, offers spectators an intimate and elegant experience.
The season features a total of thirteen shows, six of which are included in the subscription package. Very well-known performers will take the stage in Matelica: among the announced protagonists are Francesco Pannofino, Francesco Acquaroli, and Paolo Sassanelli with the classic by Tom Stoppard, Maria Grazia Cucinotta with Pino Quartullo, Rocío Muñoz Morales, and the comedian Paolo Cevoli. Alongside drama, there is an adaptation of Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment", concerts, a show for children, and musical offerings ranging from rock'n'roll to gospel.
The shows are mainly held in the evening, starting at 9 PM, while some family-oriented shows and amateur theatre are scheduled for the afternoon. The festival is a valuable opportunity to discover Matelica, the city of Verdicchio wine and the ideal capital of the upper Esino valley, combining an evening at the theatre with a visit to a historic village rich in flavours.
The 2025/2026 Theatre Season in Matelica ran from November 1, 2025, to April 30, 2026, marking thirty years since the reopening of the Teatro Piermarini in 1995. Curated by the Municipality of Matelica with AMAT, it offered a programme of thirteen titles, six on subscription, alternating great authorial drama with comedy, music, and family-oriented productions. As highlighted by the Councillor for Culture, Barbara Cacciolari, the programming was "designed for all tastes: drama, music, children's theatre, comedies, innovative shows," to strengthen Matelica's position as a reference point for theatre in the region.
All shows are held at the Giuseppe Piermarini Municipal Theatre in Matelica.
