About Social Publishing

The Social Publishing Fair (Salone dell'Editoria Sociale) is Rome's premier event dedicated to books and ideas from the third sector, promoted by the Gli Asini association. Each edition brings dozens of meetings, round tables, presentations, screenings, and debates to Rome's Ostiense district, organized in collaboration with small publishing houses, independent magazines, and social organizations. It is a free, participatory event that weaves together culture, civic engagement, and current affairs, featuring both Italian and international guests. It stands as one of the most vibrant spaces in the Lazio region for reflecting on rights, the environment, and society.

A book fair that speaks to society

The Social Publishing Fair is a cultural event held in Rome, Lazio, promoted by the Gli Asini association and Edizioni dell'Asino, alongside a network of partners that has grown over the years to include magazines, associations like Lunaria, the news agency Redattore Sociale, and the Comunità di Capodarco. It is not a commercial book fair, but a space for dialogue where independent publishers and third-sector organizations meet to reflect on the major issues of our time.

What happens at the Fair

Each edition revolves around a core theme and offers dozens of events concentrated over a few days. The program generally alternates between:

  • round tables and debates with scholars, journalists, and activists;
  • book and magazine presentations from independent publishing houses;
  • seminars and training sessions, such as the School of Social and Journalistic Inquiry;
  • film and documentary screenings focused on civic themes;
  • meetings for young people and workshops.

Admission is traditionally free, with the goal of making public debate on rights, labor, the environment, migration, and the social economy accessible to everyone.

Themes and guests of past editions

The editions have been distinguished by titles capable of capturing the restlessness of the moment: from the invitation to European reflection in «Europe on the Move» to the eleventh edition dedicated to «What is to be done? Thought and Action», which focused on the climate crisis, the economy, and social injustice. Over the years, the Fair has hosted prominent Italian and international voices, including economist Raj Patel, sociologist Saskia Sassen, and writer Margo Rejmer, alongside small publishing houses and grassroots organizations.

Ostiense, a neighborhood in transformation

Recent editions have been held at Porta Futuro, on Via Galvani, in the Ostiense district of Rome's Municipio I: an area of industrial archaeology and urban redevelopment that perfectly suits the spirit of the Fair, which is attentive to the city's social and cultural peripheries. The event has been supported by Roma Capitale – Department of Culture, confirming its deep roots in the capital's cultural life.

Why it's worth visiting

The Social Publishing Fair is an opportunity to discover books and magazines that rarely find space in mainstream circuits, listen to authors and researchers in person, and participate in free and open public debate. For those visiting Rome in the autumn, it represents a different way to experience the city, far from the beaten tourist paths and immersed in its civic and associative vitality.
