About Schignano Carnival

In the heart of the Valle Intelvi, the hamlet of Schignano preserves one of the oldest and most authentic carnivals in the Alps. Hand-carved wooden masks, the ritual clash between the elegant 'Bei' and the ragged 'Brut', the flight of the Carlisep, and the final bonfire: the Schignano Carnival is a community rite rooted in centuries-old traditions. An unmissable event for those seeking the most genuine Alpine folklore, far from spectacular city carnivals.

A Carnival of the Alps

The Schignano Carnival is one of the most fascinating traditions of mountainous Lombardy. It takes place in the hamlet of Schignano, now part of the Municipality of Centro Valle Intelvi in the Province of Como, in the picturesque Valle Intelvi between Lake Como and Lake Lugano. Unlike the grand city carnivals, here everything is ritual, memory, and identity: a peasant and ancestral carnival, recognized as one of the most authentic in the entire Alpine region.

Wooden Masks and the Clash Between Bei and Brut

The absolute protagonists are the wooden masks hand-carved by local mask makers, each unique and with strong symbolic value. The parade stages the eternal social contrast between the Bei (the "beautiful ones", rich and vain, who parade with elegant clothes and harmoniously ringing bronze bells) and the Brut (the "ugly ones", dressed in rags and soot, carrying dissonant-sounding cowbells). A representation that tells the tensions and hopes of the mountain community.

The Flight of the Carlisep and the Final Bonfire

The true symbol of the festival is the Carlisep, a puppet that personifies the Carnival itself. After days hanging in the square, on Shrove Tuesday it is carried in procession amidst symbolic chases and escapes: this is the famous "flight of the Carlisep", the moment when the Carnival attempts to escape its own end. The community chases it and brings it back to the center of the village, culminating in the final bonfire that closes the time of excess and opens, as a gesture of purification, the period of Lent.

A Living Heritage

Experiencing the Schignano Carnival means immersing yourself in an intangible heritage that the community of Valle Intelvi guards and passes down with pride. The main parades, the gathering in Piazza San Giovanni in Occagno, and the final rites make this carnival a unique experience, capable of moving even those who discover it for the first time.

Schignano Carnival — edition 2026

The Schignano Carnival 2026 takes place from February 7 to 17. The main parades are on Saturday, February 14, and Tuesday, February 17 (Shrove Tuesday), with the children's carnival on Sunday, February 8. The highlight is on the 17th with the flight of the Carlisep and the final bonfire in Piazza San Giovanni in Occagno.

The 2026 edition of the Schignano Carnival runs from February 7 to 17 in the hamlet of Schignano and Occagno, Municipality of Centro Valle Intelvi. As tradition dictates, the carnival symbolically begins on the night between January 5 and 6, but the heart of the events is concentrated in February, with the parades of wooden masks and the final rites of Shrove Tuesday.
