The patron saint of Vercelli and Piedmont celebrated on August 1st with faith, history, and grand music.
On August 1st, the city of Vercelli, in the heart of Piedmont, celebrates its patron saint Sant'Eusebio, a 4th-century bishop recognized as the first bishop of Piedmont. The Sant'Eusebio Patronal Feast is the most deeply felt religious and civic event of the year for the people of Vercelli: a day where faith, history, and culture intertwine between the Cathedral dedicated to him and the splendid Basilica of Sant'Andrea.
Sant'Eusebio is no ordinary patron: he is credited with organizing the region's first diocese and spreading Christianity throughout ancient Piedmont. For this reason, his feast extends beyond the borders of the Municipality of Vercelli, holding significance for the entire Province and beyond, drawing numerous bishops from the Piedmontese ecclesiastical province to the Cathedral.
The celebration opens with the preparatory triduum, three evenings (July 29–31) in the cathedral basilica featuring the singing of vespers and Eucharistic benediction, each hosted by different local pastoral communities. The highlight is the pontifical Mass on the morning of August 1st in the Cathedral, presided over by a guest bishop and concelebrated by the Archbishop of Vercelli, followed by the second pontifical vespers in the afternoon.
Alongside the liturgical dimension, the feast finds its cultural heart in the traditional evening concert held in the monumental Basilica of Sant'Andrea, a jewel of Vercelli's Romanesque-Gothic architecture. Promoted by the Viotti Club as part of the Viotti Festival, the concert features the Orchestra Camerata Ducale, conducted by violinist Guido Rimonda, and presents a piece from the great sacred repertoire each year. It is a free and beloved event that consistently fills the basilica.
The Patronal Feast is also an opportunity to discover Vercelli, an ancient capital of rice and a city of art: the Cathedral of Sant'Eusebio, the Basilica of Sant'Andrea, and the historic center provide the backdrop for a day that unites the community around its roots. An authentic event, far from mass tourism, for those who wish to experience the most genuine side of Piedmont.
