About Sant'Anna Chess Festival

The Sant'Anna International Chess Festival is the historic chess event of the Salento region, organized every summer by the Accademia Salentina degli Scacchi at the Palazzo Baronale Severini-Romano in Pisignano, a village near Vernole, in the province of Lecce. A week of high-level chess that attracts enthusiasts and competitors from all over Italy, featuring FSI and FIDE-rated tournaments valid for Elo rating changes. The 2026 edition, the 28th, is scheduled from July 19th to 26th.

The Sant'Anna International Chess Festival

The Sant'Anna International Chess Festival is one of the longest-running and most anticipated events in the Apulian chess scene. Established in the late nineties, it takes place every summer in Pisignano, a small village in the municipality of Vernole, in the heart of Salento in the province of Lecce. It is organized by the A.S.D. Accademia Salentina degli Scacchi, a historic local chess school led by president Aldo Russo, with the patronage of the Municipality of Vernole and the Province of Lecce.

The Venue: Palazzo Baronale Severini-Romano

Matches are played in the halls of the Palazzo Baronale Severini-Romano, located at via Lecce 1 in Pisignano. Built in the mid-17th century by the Severini family, lords of the village, the palace is now the headquarters of the Academy and also houses a library. The internal courtyard with its well and the air-conditioned halls offer a charming and comfortable setting for a full week of chess under the Salento sun.

Tournaments and Format

The event offers a week of great chess divided into three tournaments: the long-time control Standard tournament, the Rapid tournament, and the Team tournament. All tournaments are certified by the Italian Chess Federation (FSI) and FIDE and are valid for Elo rating changes. A combined ranking rewards those who participate in the entire Festival, experiencing the event from the first to the last day.

A National and International Appeal

Every year, the Sant'Anna attracts hundreds of enthusiasts and competitors from all over Italy and abroad, including Grandmasters, candidate masters, and casual amateurs. Beyond the competitive aspect, the Festival represents an important moment for promoting chess in the Salento area, while enhancing the historical heritage of Vernole and its hamlets, from Pisignano to the fortified village of Acaya.

Chess and Territory

The bond between the Festival and the Vernole area is deep: in past editions, matches have also taken place in the setting of the Castello di Giangiacomo dell'Acaya, a splendid example of Renaissance military architecture just a few kilometers from Pisignano. The combination of mind sports and the historical-artistic heritage of Salento is one of the distinctive features of the event, which unites competition, culture, and hospitality.
