Sant'Agata Festival (Faedo)

A patronal feast in the heart of the Piana Rotaliana

The Sant'Agata Festival is the patronal celebration of Faedo, a hamlet in the municipality of San Michele all'Adige, in the province of Trento, within the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Every year on February 5th, the day the liturgical calendar commemorates Saint Agatha, the small village gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together religious devotion, local identity, and mountain traditions.

Sant'Agata, the village's protector

Saint Agatha, a martyr from Catania who died in 251 AD, has been venerated for centuries as a protector against natural disasters, fires, and earthquakes. In Faedo, her cult is ancient, with roots stretching back to the Middle Ages: the first written records related to the community date back to 1145, the year the Augustinian monastery of San Michele all'Adige was founded, to which the religious community was entrusted. For the inhabitants of the hamlet, the February 5th festival has represented the most cherished identity-defining event of the year for generations.

The Church of Sant'Agata, a Gothic jewel

The heart of the festival is the Church of Sant'Agata, one of the most precious sacred buildings in the area. Likely built around the year 1000 as a small chapel, it was completely rebuilt between the late 15th and early 16th centuries by the master builder Silvestro di Como, who gave it its current Gothic appearance, featuring an ogival portal, ribbed vaults, and a characteristic bell tower. Inside, it preserves a cycle of frescoes depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ (mid-16th century), a 1533 fresco depicting Saint Anne with Mary and Jesus, and a fine 17th-century gilded wooden altar. When the old church became too small for the population at the beginning of the 20th century, the new parish church of the Most Holy Redeemer (1901) was built, but the small church of Sant'Agata has remained the spiritual symbol of the village and the focal point of the patronal feast.
