The patronal festivities of Raiano: a blend of faith, pilgrimages to the hermitage, and vibrant evenings in the square
Every May, the village of Raiano, in the heart of the Peligna Valley in the province of L'Aquila, dresses up to honor its patron saint San Venanzio Martire, alongside Saint Anthony Abbot. For three days, from May 16th to 18th, the town's streets and the ancient hermitage bearing the saint's name become the stage for one of the most attended celebrations in inland Abruzzo, blending deep religious devotion with the warmth of a local village festival.
San Venanzio was a young man who converted to Christianity and, according to tradition, retreated to these wild lands with his spiritual teacher Porphyrius before suffering martyrdom in his native Camerino in the 3rd century. His liturgical feast falls on May 18th, the day Raiano experiences the most intense moments of the celebration. The spiritual heart of the event is the Eremo di San Venanzio, an extraordinary religious complex straddling the Aterno River, nestled between the rocky walls of the Gole di San Venanzio Regional Nature Reserve. The sanctuary, mentioned in papal bulls as early as the 12th century and extensively restored in the 17th century, houses the famous Holy Staircase carved into the rock and three niches with the saint's imprints: according to popular belief, pilgrims press their elbows, heads, and feet against them to find relief from rheumatic pain.
The Raiano festival preserves ancient and evocative customs. After the solemn mass, a sort of auction is held among the devotees to earn the honor of carrying the saint's statue on their shoulders during the procession, while banners are awarded to which traditional ciambelle (ring-shaped pastries) are attached. The procession winds through the entire town, followed by a crowd of faithful and pilgrims who climb up to the hermitage. Alongside the religious dimension, the secular program transforms Piazza Umberto Postiglione into an open-air theater, animated by stalls, food trucks, brass band concerts, musical shows, and the grand pyrotechnic displays that close each edition.
Organized by the Festival Committee together with the Municipality of Raiano, the San Venanzio Festival is much more than a religious anniversary: it is a moment of collective identity where the community reconnects with its roots. The combination of the hermitage's spirituality, traditions passed down through generations, and evenings of music and entertainment makes it an unmissable appointment for those wanting to discover the authentic soul of Abruzzo and the province of L'Aquila.
The 2026 edition of the festivities in honor of San Venanzio Martire and Saint Anthony Abbot animated Raiano from May 16th to 18th. Alongside the religious rites that culminated in the Holy Mass at the Eremo di San Venanzio and the solemn processions, the Festival Committee offered three evenings of great entertainment in Piazza Umberto Postiglione, closed by the traditional fireworks over Viale delle Medaglie d'Oro.
Raiano is located in the Peligna Valley, in the province of L'Aquila. By car, it is accessible via the A25 Rome-Pescara motorway (Pratola Peligna-Sulmona exit), just a few kilometers from the center. The Raiano train station is served by the Rome-Pescara/Sulmona line.
Religious celebrations culminate at the Eremo di San Venanzio in the Gole dell'Aterno; secular events are held in Piazza Umberto Postiglione, while the fireworks display illuminates Viale delle Medaglie d'Oro and the Cipriani Sports Field.
Participation in the festival and square performances is free.
