San Candido's New Year's celebration featuring a ski show, marching band, and a toast in the square
In the heart of the Sesto Dolomites, the town of San Candido/Innichen (Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige) welcomes the New Year with a popular, completely free celebration that brings residents and visitors together on January 1st. It is a cherished tradition that combines the spectacle of the mountains with the town's musical heritage and the warmth of a collective toast in the square.
The highlight is the spectacular ski show performed by instructors from the San Candido Ski and Snowboard School on the slopes of Mount Baranci (Haunold) as dusk falls over the peaks. Synchronized descents, torches, and choreographies on the snow transform the snowy mountainside into a natural stage visible from the town.
A parade sets off from the Franciscan Convent, accompanying the San Candido marching band, ski instructors, and local winter sports athletes to Piazza del Magistrato, the heart of the historic center. Here, New Year's greetings are exchanged, and a welcome toast is offered—a collective celebration to end the day. Above the town, the number of the new year is formed with torches on Mount San Candido, the iconic image of the evening.
The event is designed for all ages: music, mountain atmosphere, games and entertainment for children, hot drinks, and social opportunities for adults. Admission is free and open to everyone, set in one of the most picturesque locations in South Tyrol, just a stone's throw from the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
The January 1st, 2026 edition followed the well-established ritual of the San Candido New Year's celebration in the Upper Puster Valley. At 5:30 PM, the ski show by instructors from the San Candido Ski and Snowboard School animated the slopes of Mount Baranci, followed in the evening by a parade that accompanied the marching band, ski instructors, and winter sports athletes from the Franciscan Convent to Piazza del Magistrato. Here, New Year's greetings were exchanged and a welcome toast was held, while the number 2026 was traced with torches on Mount San Candido. A free event open to all.
In the evening, the number 2026 is formed with torches on Mount San Candido.
Every year on January 1st, in the late afternoon. The ski show on Mount Baranci begins around 5:30 PM, followed by the parade toward Piazza del Magistrato in the evening.
