March 19th in Bonito: a blend of devotion, music, and the flavors of Irpinia

The Saint Joseph's Festival is a key event in the civil and religious calendar of Bonito, a town of just over two thousand residents nestled at 490 meters above sea level on the left side of the Ufita Valley, in the province of Avellino, in the heart of inland Campania. The festival takes place every year on March 19th, a fixed date in the liturgical calendar, and is promoted by the Municipality of Bonito with the support of local associations.
While not the town's patronal feast—the patron saint of Bonito is Saint Bonito of Clermont, celebrated on January 15th—it is a parallel and equally heartfelt devotion. In the agricultural South, Saint Joseph has always held special significance as the protector of carpenters, workers, fathers, and the dying.
The day begins with liturgical celebrations and moments of veneration dedicated to the Saint, followed by gatherings throughout the historic center. March 19th serves as a symbolic threshold, falling near the equinox when the Irpinian countryside awakens and the first mild days invite people outdoors. For this reason, the festival has always had a dual nature—religious and rural—which in Bonito translates into a town-wide celebration open to everyone.
The primary devotional landmark is the Church of Saint Joseph, first mentioned in 1517, which was built during the town's early demographic expansion. Inside, it houses an ancient statue of Saint Peter. For many residents, walking through the village alleys to reach the church is the most authentic part of the day.
The Saint Joseph tradition is observed throughout Irpinia with rituals leading up to the date. In many towns across the province, on the evening of March 18th, traditional bonfires are lit: piles of wood and pruning debris burn on the edges of town squares, a practice scholars trace back to ancient purification rites linked to the agricultural cycle, later absorbed by the Christian calendar.
As for the culinary side, the iconic treat remains the zeppola di San Giuseppe, prepared in Irpinian homes and bakeries with almost votive care. Anyone visiting Bonito on March 19th will find it impossible to resist.
Alongside the religious dimension, the municipal program traditionally includes musical performances and entertainment, while the Pro Loco manages the culinary offerings with local specialties. Admission to the events is free: it is a community festival, not a ticketed event.
Those who travel to Bonito for the festival will find much more than just a day of celebration. The town is known for its open-air street art museum, featuring works by international artists scattered among the alleys, and for its permanent exhibition dedicated to peasant civilization. Visitors can also see traces of the Norman castle with the Torre Maluocchi and, in the Morroni area, the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima della Neve. Bonito is also the birthplace of Salvatore Ferragamo, founder of the famous fashion house, and his wife, Wanda Miletti.
Details regarding schedules and events are announced by the Municipality in the weeks leading up to the festival on official channels and the events page of the municipal website. Those planning a visit from outside the province should check the updated calendar before traveling.
As of now, there is no official communication from the Municipality of Bonito regarding the 2026 Saint Joseph's Festival. However, the event is tied to a fixed date, March 19th, and is celebrated continuously in the Irpinian village; it is therefore reasonable to expect the usual appointment, though this does not constitute an official confirmation.
Since no program has been published, we do not report times, shows, or initiatives: we prefer the absence of information to unverified information. Useful details will appear, as usual, on the events page of the municipal website and on the Pro Loco channels in the weeks preceding the event.

Bonito is connected by a provincial road to the SS 90 delle Puglie: from one side, you can reach Avellino and Benevento, and from the other, Ariano Irpino and Foggia. Traveling by car is the most convenient option, as there is no direct train service to the town. The nearest airports are Naples Capodichino and Bari Palese.
Admission to all events is free. Culinary offerings by the Pro Loco are available for purchase at affordable prices.
Accommodation in Bonito is limited to a few establishments; for longer stays, it is advisable to look in Ariano Irpino, Grottaminarda, or Mirabella Eclano, all of which are nearby.
In March, at 490 meters above sea level, Irpinian evenings are still cold: bring warm clothing. The historic center is best explored on foot, with alleys and stairways: comfortable shoes are recommended. For schedules and updates: Municipality of Bonito, tel. +39 0825 422054.
