In Faicchio, devotion to the patron saint meets processions, brass bands, and the 'Castle Fire' display

In Faicchio, a village of about 3,500 residents nestled in the hills of the Sannio region, in the province of Benevento (Campania), Saint John the Baptist is the patron saint. While the liturgical feast falls on June 24th, the solemn civil and religious celebrations have long been held in late August—a choice both practical and sentimental, as this is when many Faicchiani living in Italy and abroad return home to reunite with their families. For a few days, the small Municipality of Faicchio doubles its population, and the historic center comes alive with lights, music, and the aroma of home-cooked food.
The religious program begins with the triduum of preparation at the Church of Saint John the Baptist on Via De Martino, featuring confessions, the recitation of the Holy Rosary, and late-afternoon Eucharistic celebrations. The highlight is the solemn procession carrying the statue of the Saint through the main streets of the village, accompanied by a brass band—past editions have featured ensembles such as the «P. Armellino» and «M. Meneo» bands—and greeted by traditional firework salutes. On the feast day, masses are held throughout the day in the parish church, while the procession of the faithful winds through the village alleys.
Piazza Roma is the heart of the festival's civil celebrations. From 8:00 PM onwards, the square comes alive with shows, concerts, and folk music groups. Over the years, guests have included jazz trumpeter Luca Aquino, folk ensembles performing tammurriata, pizzica, and tarantellas, street bands, and groups dedicated to covers of 1970s and 80s Italian pop. Beside the stage, stalls offering local products are managed by local associations and the Pro Loco «Prof. Umberto Fragola», which has collaborated with the parish and the municipal administration for years.
The festival concludes with a spectacular pyromusical show. For several years, the most beloved format has been the «Incendio del Castello» (Castle Fire): fireworks synchronized to music paint the Ducal Castle, which overlooks the village, in light, creating a scenic effect visible from across the entire valley. In some editions, the pyrotechnic show has been moved to the municipal building area on Via Regina Elena, but it remains the most photographed and anticipated moment, closing the festivities late into the night.
Gastronomy has become increasingly important over the years. In 2025, the festival hosted «My Special Pasta», an event dedicated to freshly prepared pasta—including gluten-free options—alongside tastings of local specialties and a show cooking session with guest chefs. It is a way to showcase the rural cuisine of the Sannio region, rich in fresh pasta, vegetables, cheeses, and cured meats, while also promoting the local area.
The festivities are traditionally concentrated over a weekend in late August, spanning three or four consecutive evenings. The dates change from year to year and are announced by the festival committee a few weeks in advance. Those visiting in August can combine the trip with Medievalia, Faicchio's historical re-enactment featuring the Palio of the districts dedicated to Saint John, which takes place in the village during the same summer days but is a separate event from the patronal festival.
Faicchio is located just a few kilometers from the Telese Thermal Baths, about thirty kilometers from Benevento, and fifty from Naples, in a hilly area dotted with hamlets—Casali, Massa, Fontanavecchia, Santa Lucia, Cortesano—each preserving its own customs. The Ducal Castle and the alleys of the historic center provide the natural backdrop for the village's celebrations. For visitors seeking an authentic Sannio experience, the Saint John the Baptist Festival is one of the best times of the year: no tourist staging, just a community celebrating itself.
As of the update of this page, the official dates for the 2026 festivities in honor of Saint John the Baptist, patron saint of Faicchio (province of Benevento, Campania), have not been published. The festival program is usually made public a few weeks in advance via posters in the village and on the parish and municipal channels.
The structure of the festival is well-established: triduum of preparation at the Church of Saint John the Baptist, solemn procession with the statue of the Saint accompanied by a brass band, evenings of entertainment and folk music in Piazza Roma starting at 8:00 PM, stalls featuring typical Sannio products, and, as a grand finale, the pyromusical show at the Ducal Castle. We recommend checking the dates with the Municipality of Faicchio or the Pro Loco «Prof. Umberto Fragola» before traveling.
Faicchio is in the Sannio region, about 30 km northwest of Benevento and 50 km from Naples. By car: take the A1 motorway to the Caianello or Caserta Nord exit, then follow the SS372 «Telesina» towards Telese Terme and take the provincial roads to Faicchio. By train: arrive at the Telese Terme-Cerreto station on the Naples-Benevento line, then continue by bus or taxi.
The evening events are held in Piazza Roma, in the center of the village; religious celebrations take place at the Church of Saint John the Baptist on Via De Martino. The pyromusical show can be viewed from the center or from scenic points looking toward the Ducal Castle.
Admission to the shows in the square is free; tastings at the food stalls are paid. We recommend arriving early to find parking in the streets around the center and bringing a light jacket, as temperatures drop during late August evenings. For accommodation, there are facilities in Telese Terme, San Salvatore Telesino, and Cusano Mutri.
