Maccheroni, grilled meat and pizzica at the end of summer
In Pietracatella, a village in the Fortore area of the province of Campobasso, the feast of Saint John the Baptist is celebrated towards the end of August and is accompanied by the Maccheroni Festival, one of the most beloved gastronomic events in the town.
The stars of the festival are the homemade maccheroni, seasoned according to tradition, along with sausage and grilled meat. The food stalls, set up in the town center, offer the authentic flavors of Molisan cuisine, to be enjoyed with friends on a warm late summer evening.
Accompanying the festival is folk music, with a lively evening of pizzica and taranta that gets the square dancing. Between food, music, and celebration, the feast of Saint John the Baptist cheerfully closes Pietracatella's summer calendar, combining devotion, gastronomy, and folk tradition.
The 2026 edition of the Saint John the Baptist Festival with the Maccheroni Festival takes place in Pietracatella at the end of August, following the tradition of placing it around August 29. The evening combines food stalls with homemade maccheroni, sausage, and grilled meat with folk music and pizzica.
