Sacred Passion of Christ Play of Maenza

A whole village becoming Jerusalem

The Sacred Passion of Christ Play in Maenza, located in the municipality of the same name in the province of Latina (Lazio), is much more than a procession: it is a true itinerant theatrical performance involving the entire community. Since 1969, the inhabitants of this medieval village in the Lepini Mountains have transformed for one evening into citizens of Jerusalem, apostles, Roman soldiers, and townspeople. The result is one of the most highly regarded sacred re-enactments in Italy and Europe.

Over three hundred and fifty performers

Each edition mobilizes more than 350 performers—men, women, youth, and children—supported by over seventy technicians. The main roles are entrusted to the locals themselves: Jesus, the Madonna, Mary Magdalene, Judas, Caiaphas, Pilate, and Herod. A narrator, the Prophet, guides the audience from scene to scene. Costumes are faithfully reproduced by Roman theatrical artisans, while sets, weapons, lighting, and the soundtrack are largely created by local craftsmen.

A route of over three kilometers

What makes the Maenza Passion unique is its itinerant nature: the show unfolds along a scenic route of more than three kilometers that crosses the historic center. Spectators do not remain seated; they walk alongside the actors, moving from one scene to the next. The locations are not reconstructions: they are the Baronial Castle, the olive groves surrounding the town, and the squares and cobblestone alleys that become, in turn, the temple, Gethsemane, the praetorium, and Golgotha.

Two events during Holy Week

The performance is traditionally divided into two distinct moments:

• Palm Sunday — Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem, featuring scenes of the Baptism in the Jordan, miracles, and the expulsion of the merchants from the temple;
• Good Friday — the heart of the event: the Last Supper, the agony in Gethsemane, the betrayal, the trials before Caiaphas and Pilate, the flagellation, the climb to Calvary, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection.

The association also offers a third performance dedicated to the Nativity during the Christmas period.

Recognition and the European circuit

Since 2000, the event has been part of Europassion, the European network that brings together the continent's main Passion plays. The event was presented at the Italian Senate in 2023 and featured at the Venice Film Festival in 2019 with a dedicated documentary. For Maenza, a village of just over three thousand inhabitants, it has become a defining identity trait recognized far beyond the borders of the Latina province.

The community as the protagonist

The secret to the longevity of the Maenza Passion lies in its choral and volunteer-based nature. Rehearsals begin months in advance, roles are often passed down from father to son, and the organization is managed by the Association of the Sacred Passion of Good Friday, which relies on donations, public contributions, and the unpaid work of hundreds of people. This very economic fragility led to the suspension of the annual edition in 2026 due to a lack of funds, with a declared commitment to return to the stage the following year.

The territory of the Lepini Mountains

Maenza is located about 116 kilometers from Rome, perched on the slopes of the Lepini Mountains, and preserves an intact medieval layout dominated by the Baronial Castle. A visit to the Passion can easily be combined with discovering nearby villages—Priverno, Sermoneta, Roccagorga—and the Lepini cuisine, characterized by extra virgin olive oil, sheep's milk cheeses, and simple dishes from the rural tradition of southern Lazio.
