A solstice night among the stone alleys and tuff caves of this Norman village in Alta Irpinia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, on the night following the summer solstice, the historic centers of I Borghi piรน belli d'Italia light up for The Romantic Night: a national event dedicated to love, art, and memory, involving over two hundred villages from north to south and attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. In the Municipality of Zungoli, in the Province of Avellino, the evening takes on a special flavor: this small town in Alta Irpinia, in the Campania region, is a member of the 'Most Beautiful Villages in Italy' association and holds the Orange Flag from the Italian Touring Club. For one night, its stone alleys become a sprawling stage, with music echoing between the arches.
Perched at an altitude of 657 meters on a tuff hill in the upper Ufita valley, just a stone's throw from the border with Puglia, Zungoli preserves a typically medieval urban layout: irregular narrow streets, arches, stairways, and local stone portals. The town is dominated by the Norman castle, built in the 11th century and completed in the Aragonese era with four cylindrical corner towers, later transformed into a noble residence. Beneath the houses lies the famous network of caves carved into the tuff, used for centuries to age cheeses, while the characteristic "case pontili" (bridge houses) tell the story of an ancient way of living on the slope. The San Francesco convent and the church of Santa Maria Assunta complete the picture.
The format of the Romantic Night in Zungoli is well-established and intentionally widespread: it begins in the late afternoon with a romantic aperitif between Piazza Castello and Via Giudea, then the village fills with musical and artistic stations that remain active until late at night. Piazza Castello, Piazza Municipio, and the alleys of the historic center host different offerings simultaneously, allowing the public to choose their own path.
The symbolic moment is the same in all participating villages: at midnight, the so-called breathtaking minute takes place, when couples, families, and groups of friends embrace and kiss together to the notes of the same song broadcast simultaneously throughout Italy. In Zungoli, the ritual takes place in front of the castle, set against the final shows of the night: it is the image that, more than any other, captures the spirit of the event, which is much more participatory than spectacular.
The gastronomic aspect is not just a side dish. Zungoli is known for cheeses aged in tuff caves, from caciocavallo podolico to caciomolara, which are sampled during the evening alongside local cured meats, fried pizza, grilled meat, traditional peasant dishes, and homemade desserts, accompanied by Irpinian wines. It is a direct way to understand why this corner of Campania has joined the circuit of the country's most beautiful villages.
According to local tradition, Zungoli also boasts a curious literary connection: Giovan Battista Basile, author of Lo cunto de li cunti (The Tale of Tales), the first great European collection of fairy tales, was the governor of the village in 1616. This is no small detail for a night that plays on a fairytale atmosphere: walking toward the castle with music in the distance is the experience organizers suggest not to miss.
For 2026, the national association has set the main date for Saturday, June 20, with some villages distributing events between June 19 and 21, with a theme dedicated to the love for memories. However, as of the writing of this entry, Zungoli does not appear on the official list of participating villages, and the Municipality has not yet released a program: those planning to head to Irpinia should check the official channels of the Municipality of Zungoli first. The last documented edition remains that of Saturday, June 21, 2025, which enlivened the historic center from 6:30 PM until late at night.
The Romantic Night 2026 is scheduled nationally for Saturday, June 20, with some villages anticipating or postponing by one day within the June 19-21 window. At the moment, however, there is no official communication from the Municipality of Zungoli regarding participation in the 2026 edition, and the village does not appear on the list of participants published by the association.
The date indicated in this entry is therefore indicative, based on the period in which the event has always taken place in Zungoli (the night following the summer solstice, usually the third Saturday of June). No program has been released yet: as soon as confirmations arrive from the Municipality or the association, we will update the entry with certain dates, times, locations, and artists.
Those who still wish to visit Zungoli during that period will find one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, with its Norman castle, tuff cheese-aging caves, and medieval historic center: valid reasons for a stop in Alta Irpinia even outside the event dates.
Zungoli is located in the upper Ufita valley, in the northeastern part of the Province of Avellino, near the border with Puglia. It is easily reached by car from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, then continuing along the provincial roads of the Ufita area. Public transport is limited to local bus lines: the car remains the most practical solution, especially for returning after midnight.
The historic center is a maze of stone alleys, stairways, and inclines: during the evening, access is on foot, and it is advisable to leave the car in parking areas at the edge of the town. Comfortable shoes with non-slip soles are recommended; the route is not entirely suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.
In past editions, entry to the village and access to the shows have always been free; only drinks, tastings, and dinners offered by local operators are paid.
