The legend of the undefeated champion, celebrating sport, memory, and community in the Fortore valley
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Rocky Marciano, the only world heavyweight champion to retire undefeated, was a son of Italian migration to the United States. His mother, Pasqualina Picciuto, was born in San Bartolomeo in Galdo in 1902 and left for America in 1916; his father hailed from Ripa Teatina in Abruzzo. This dual heritage inspired the twinning of the two towns and the establishment of the Rocky Marciano Festival, which brings a weekend of sport, culture, and shared memory to the Fortore village every August.
The festival is more than just a commemoration; it is a vibrant hub featuring road races, exhibitions, meetings with sports figures, workshops for children, live music, and award ceremonies. Events take place across the Villa Comunale, public squares, and the historic center, offering a popular and largely free program designed for both residents and the many emigrants who return home during the summer.
The sporting heart of the event is the «10 km of the Champion» road race, which held its inaugural edition in 2025 along the town's streets at an altitude of nearly 600 meters. The race is accompanied by workshops and physical activities for all ages, reflecting the organizers' vision of «sport as a community-building tool».
Each edition culminates in the presentation of the Rocky Marciano Award, recognizing athletes, artists, associations, and local schools that embody the values of the Italian-American boxer: commitment, courage, and determination. The fifth edition was presented in 2025 by sports journalist Dario Ricci (Radio24), the festival's artistic director, and included special mentions and lifetime achievement awards.
The competitive side is complemented by a cultural program, including the «King of the Ring» exhibition by artist Francesco Colafella, dedicated to the faces and emotions of boxing legends; a permanent artwork dedicated to Rocky Marciano in the restored Villa Comunale; conferences on sport, health, and wellness; and the awards ceremony for the «Stories of Sport – Schools Section» literary contest, promoted by Lab DFG publishing house in partnership with the Invictus literary prize.
The festival is held in tandem with the Datterino Tomato Festival of San Bartolomeo in Galdo. The local tomato, grown in dry conditions at over 500 meters above sea level, is the star of tastings, evening menus, children's workshops, and a conference on the agricultural potential of the Fortore region. This pairing makes the event a true popular celebration, where sporting heritage and gastronomy support one another.
To understand this festival, one must look at the geography: San Bartolomeo in Galdo is the northernmost town in the province of Benevento, a borderland between Campania, Molise, and Puglia with a history of depopulation and migration that the story of Marciano transforms into a source of identity and pride. It is no coincidence that in May 2026, the town hosted the first stage of the Sports Myth Festival, a two-day study on Diego Armando Maradona featuring Argentine journalist Daniel Martinez of ESPN and Paralympic swimming champion Vincenzo Boni—the same network of towns and associations that powers the Rocky Marciano Festival.
The event is promoted by the Municipality of San Bartolomeo in Galdo and the Le Feste di SBiG Committee, in collaboration with the APS Festival Rocky Marciano ETS of Ripa Teatina (chaired by Gianluca Palladinetti), the Municipality of Ripa Teatina, the Lab DFG publishing house, and the Invictus literary prize, with the involvement of local associations and schools in the Fortore area.
At the time of writing, the official dates for the 2026 edition of the Rocky Marciano Festival in San Bartolomeo in Galdo have not been announced, nor has the program. The reference remains the 'Estate sanbartolomeana' calendar, which the Municipality usually releases in July and which, in previous years, has scheduled the festival and the Rocky Marciano Award for mid-August, alongside the Datterino Tomato Festival.
Signs of continuity are evident: in May 2026, San Bartolomeo in Galdo hosted, between the library and the municipal theater, the first stage of the Sports Myth Festival, featuring two days of studies on Diego Armando Maradona promoted by the Lab DFG publishing house and linked to the network of towns twinned in the name of Rocky Marciano (Ripa Teatina, Policoro, San Felice Circeo). This is the same ecosystem of associations, schools, and administrations that brings the August event to life.
Those wishing to participate can monitor the channels of the Municipality of San Bartolomeo in Galdo and the APS Festival Rocky Marciano: we will update this page as soon as dates and the program are announced.
Recurring elements from previous editions, not yet confirmed for 2026:
San Bartolomeo in Galdo is located at an altitude of 597 meters in the upper Fortore valley, at the northern edge of the province of Benevento, about 60 kilometers from the capital. It is easily reached by car via the Fortore valley; from the north, the motorway exit is Termoli on the A14, and from the south, Benevento on the A16. The most convenient train station is in Benevento, from where you can continue by local bus.
Events are spread across the town center: the Villa Comunale, home to the exhibition and the Rocky Marciano monument, and Via Pasquale Circelli, where the food festival and conferences are held. The road race starts from the town center.
Conferences, exhibitions, and the award ceremony are free to attend. Tastings at the food festival and the festival dinner are paid separately, with prices announced on-site; for registration for the «10 km of the Champion» race, please contact the organizers directly.
August evenings at this altitude can be cool, so a light sweater is recommended. The town has limited accommodation, so visitors from outside the region may prefer to stay in nearby Fortore villages or the Benevento area. Exact dates are usually announced with the 'Estate sanbartolomeana' (San Bartolomeo Summer) program, published by the Municipality in July.
