Monza returns to the Middle Ages with a procession, falconry, and the Teodolindea Dove
Every year, on a weekend in June, the historic center of Monza (Province of Monza and Brianza) transforms into an open-air stage where medieval Modoetia comes alive again. The Rievocazione Storica Monzese is organized by the Committee for the Rievocazione Storica Monzese and involves hundreds of costumed participants, who animate squares and districts with processions, shows, and demonstrations of ancient arts.
Each year, the event chooses an episode from the city's history as its theme: the 2026 edition, the 45th, is dedicated to the theme "A.D. 1407 — Estore Visconti is Lord of Modoetia", recalling the bond between Monza and the powerful Visconti family. The medieval city thus revives not as a generic backdrop, but as a reconstruction linked to its own historical memory.
The program alternates moments of popular celebration and grand evening shows: the medieval market with artisan workshops, demonstrations of ancient crafts, falconry, duels between armed men, flag throwers, stilt walkers, and jugglers. The most anticipated moment is the historical procession that crosses the center to Piazza Duomo, where the final show takes place with pyrotechnic effects and the flight of the Teodolindea Dove, a symbol that links the reenactment to the figure of the Lombard queen Teodolinda, deeply rooted in Monza's tradition.
The Rievocazione Storica Monzese is much more than a show: it is a moment of community that brings together associations, historical groups, and citizens around Monza's identity heritage. Access to the evening shows in Piazza Duomo requires free booking, while the market and daytime entertainment are freely accessible along the city streets.
The 2026 edition, the 45th, revolves around the theme "A.D. 1407 — Estore Visconti is Lord of Modoetia" and takes place in the historic center of Monza on Friday, June 5th, and Saturday, June 6th. It opens with the traditional risotto feast and concludes with the historical procession and the show in Piazza Duomo, featuring pyrotechnic effects and the flight of the Teodolindea Dove.
Historic center of Monza: Piazza Roma, Piazza Duomo, and Piazza Cambiaghi. The area is pedestrianized during the event.
Monza is easily reachable by train from Monza station (lines from Milan), a few minutes' walk from the center. By car, it's best to use the peripheral parking lots given the closure of the historic center to traffic.
Daytime entertainment and the medieval market are free to access. The evening show in Piazza Duomo is free but requires booking (limited seats).
